As teachers, we know the major impact that literacy has on our lives. It is the most fundamental skill that is necessary in order to gain the knowledge of anything else that may peak our interests. If nothing else is instilled in our students, let the ability and love of reading be the goal we have for them. It all begins at a young age, from chewing on baby books, to exploring picture books, to being read to by a beloved adult in their lives. However, as teachers, we have a huge task set before us when it comes to keeping that thirst for knowledge alive in our students. The best thing we can do for them is build their confidence by taking slow and steady steps. This is a Synonym and Antonym Game that is great for any and all students across any subject. Whether your 3rd grade students need practice with their science vocabulary or your 2nd grade students need practice with math vocabulary, this game will help! They will solidify their understanding of the words by the exposure to synonyms and antonyms. How To Use This Resource: Divide your class into two or more groups. Assign each group up to three vocabulary words. Have groups use a dictionary, thesaurus, or the Internet to discover synonyms and antonyms for each vocabulary word. Have the groups take turns reading their lists of synonyms and antonyms* to the other groups. Many students have a hard time sharing their ideas out loud. Would You Rather questions are a great way to get all students involved. You could do just speaking and listening where you put the questions up and students share their answers. You could print out the questions and have students answer in groups. Or, you could have students write answers in complete sentences and then share. Would You Rather questions not only allow students to communicate with each other, it's a great opportunity for students to see who might have common interests. If students complete these in a group setting, there could be some great discussions that students have based on who has the same answers. In the first game, one picture will slowly appear (20 seconds long). Press the cookie in the bottom-left to begin, press again to reveal the answer. Press the arrow in the bottom-right to change to the next page. There are 9 questions in total Second game is similar but there will be two pictures appearing at the same time. Press the donut in the bottom-left to begin. The pictures will appear on the clock, press the pink clock button next to the picture that corresponds to the word at the top. Wrong answer will buzz, correct answer will make a noise and both pictures will be fully revealed. Press arrow in the bottom-right to change page. 4 questions in total.
