Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Dice Game

This is a fun and easy game to add to your fractions unit to help students practice working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students must demonstrate knowledge of what makes an improper fraction, how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, and how to order and compare mixed numbers. I suggest using 10-sided dice (if possible) for a wider variety of outcomes. I encourage my students to use mini-whiteboards for recording their work and doing their calculations. Student Instructions: 1) You and your partner each roll the die two times so you each have two numbers. 2) Use your two numbers to make an IMPROPER FRACTION (which one should be the numerator?). 3) Write down your improper fraction and convert it to a mixed number. 4) Compare with your partner’s mixed number. Which number is bigger? You might have to find a common denominator if the whole numbers are the same. 5) The person with the larger number gets a point. Play until one person has five points. Grades to Use With: This is a simple game that can be an addition to a lesson or fraction review in grades 3-7 when students are working with fractions that have a value greater than one. Standards: CCSS3NF.A.3 Compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions CCSS4NF.A.2 Compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions- finding common denominators CCSS4NF.B.4a Fractions greater than 1 and multiplying fractions What's Included: A simple 2 Page PDF. 5 Minute Game: Guess My Number

Here is a quick no-prep game for any elementary classroom: Guess My Number! It helps teach place value, fractions, greater than/less than, logic and working memory skills. This product includes a one-page instruction sheet including the skills taught, different player configurations, rules, a sample round, and extension ideas. This game requires NO PREP and NO MATERIALS at all. Grades to Use With: This game can be used in any elementary classroom (grades K-8). It is great for the following uses: · - Morning/home-room warm-up · - TOC back-up activity · - To fill the 5 minutes before lunch or the end of the day · - As a reward for small-group or one-to-one tutoring Guess My Number Rules: Start with a range based on your students (ex: 1-20 for K, 1-100 for Gr 1-4, 1-200 for Gr 5-7). The teacher (or student if playing in pairs) thinks of a number in that range. The other student (or whole class) has exactly 5 questions of greater than or less than to narrow it down. After 5 questions, they must guess the number. Sample Round: T: I’m thinking of a number between 1-100. S1: Is it greater than 50? T: Yes. S2: Is it greater than 75? T: No. S3: Is it less than 60? T: No. S4: Is it less than 70? T: Yes. S5: Is it greater than 65? T: No This class has narrowed it down to between 60-65. Now they guess. (The number was 62.) Vocabulary practice made fun! This English #vocabulary #game practices 16 high-frequency #weather and #landform words. Editable pages make it easy to add in extra words your learners are working on. Learners will practice reading the words saying "I have ____. Who has _____?". Then classmates will search their cards to see if they have the weather or landform in question! Repeated exposure is necessary for vocabulary retention. In addition, a QR code has been provided in the instructions. Stress Management Game played like Apples To Apples-Handouts

In this fun game, played similarly to the Apples To Apples game, students will read different stressful situations and choose a strategy they would use for that situation. There are 18 situation cards and 36 strategy cards. Each player draws 5 strategy cards (they do not show the other players which cards they have). The "judge" will draw a situation card and show the other players the card after reading the situation. For example, "You don't know the answers when taking a test." Then the other players will choose a strategy card they would use for that situation and place it face down to near the judge. The judge will read the different strategy cards and choose which one they would most likely choose. Important to convey to students: There is no "wrong" strategy, just a strategy that the judge would most likely use. Then for the next round, a different person is the judge and the game continues. the discarded strategy cards can get placed under the strategy pile. the person whose strategy was chosen, gets the situation card and also gets one point. This is a fun and engaging way to get students talking about different strategies they would use for stress management as well as different types of stressful situations they can manage if they need to. In this resource you will also be getting 2 mindful coloring handouts. This is a great way to finish the lesson after the game. I also like to begin this lesson by introducing a Brain Pop on stress. You can also choose a short video of your choice or a book about stress to prime the students' brains about what stress is, possible triggers of stress and how to cope with stress. Then the game can be played and can reinforce the topic.
