Sunglasses Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Language Development, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Writing, Science, Physics, History, Social Studies, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans
This sunglasses reading comprehension includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Sunglasses Genre: Nonfiction (informational text + support pages) Subject: Science (Light) / Health & Safety Primary Topic: Why sunglasses help and how they evolved Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): Q What This Lesson Teaches Best What glare is and how tinted lenses can “calm down” sharp, shiny light bouncing off surfaces like water, sand, snow, or a car hood. A simple history of eye protection: smoky quartz lenses in 12th-century China and Inuit snow goggles with narrow slits to cut glare. How sunglasses became part of everyday life (experiments with tints; boardwalk sales in 1929; polarized lenses arriving in 1936). What UV light is (invisible but harmful over time) and what UV400 labeling means in the passage (filtering nearly all UVA/UVB up to 400 nanometers). How polarized lenses reduce reflected sparkle off flat surfaces like roads and water, making shapes easier to see. Learning Goals Define glare using details from the passage. Explain how tinted lenses help eyes feel more comfortable in bright sunlight. Describe two early ways people protected their eyes from harsh light. Explain how sunglasses became popular for everyday use using the dates and examples given. Describe what UV light is and what UV400 means in the passage. Explain how polarized lenses help with reflections off water and roads. Key Vocabulary From the Text glare — sharp, shiny light that bounces off surfaces. tinted — made darker, like a shaded window for eyes. quartz — a mineral used like simple dark lenses long ago. ultraviolet — invisible light that can harm eyes and skin over time. polarized — lens type that reduces reflections and sparkle. Are Birds and Dinosaurs Related? This activity pack helps students explore the scientific evidence behind the connection between birds and dinosaurs. Instead of simply presenting one viewpoint, this resource encourages students to analyze the evidence and form their own conclusions. I developed this project with my son, who has Autism, in mind. He struggles with writing and organizing his thoughts on paper. Using sorting mat activities reduced frustration and made learning more engaging. As a result, I began creating similar resources to help other teachers and parents make learning more interactive and enjoyable. What’s Included in This Activity Pack? Sorting Activities – Helps students categorize and compare information. Research and Writing Assignments – Encourages deeper exploration and evidence-based conclusions. Critical Thinking Development – Supports analytical thinking skills. Dinosaur Recognition Practice – Reinforces knowledge of different dinosaur types. Comparison of Bird-Hipped vs. Lizard-Hipped Dinosaurs – Explores their significance in relation to evolutionary theory. Bonus Activities: Realistic Dinosaur Coloring Pages Dinosaur Information Sheets for guided research Total: 41 Pages Learning Objectives By completing all activities, students will: Identify and describe at least one difference between bird-hipped and lizard-hipped dinosaurs. Name at least two bird-hipped and two lizard-hipped dinosaurs. List at least two facts about Archaeopteryx. Compare feathers and scales by identifying at least two key differences. Explain the difference between cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals. Research both sides of the "birds from dinosaurs" debate and write a five-paragraph report comparing bird-hipped and lizard-hipped dinosaurs. Analyze whether the evidence logically supports the idea that birds evolved from dinosaurs. This resource provides structured, hands-on learning that supports student inquiry and engagement.

Responsible Digital Citizenship Strategies SEL Skill Writing Challenge
P.E. & Health, ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, STEM, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Resources, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Teaching critical social emotional skills while getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. With childhood use of technology on the rise, digital citizenship is an integral skill to teach our learners. One way we can do this is by role playing and creating stories. This resource (and the others that complement it in this series!) seeks to provide the scaffolding needed for learners to imagine and begin telling a story in written form. Then they're invited into 5 different STEAM extension activities to keep the conversations going. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Remember, there are over a year's worth of writing activities in this line! Keep the fun stories rolling by checking out holiday, winter, summer, life skills, and adventure writing activities from Melissa Is Teaching! This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders as they take on the cognitively heavy task of writing a narrative, while also supporting them with the scaffolding and inspiration in the provided idea matrix. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4+ extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
