There is a 5 by 5 grid of squares with operational words. Students are asked to color the boxes containing addition words with blue, subtraction words with pink, multiplication words with yellow, and division words with orange. The words for addition are plus, sum, increase, greater than, add, more than, total and in all. The words for subtraction are reduce, minus, less than, difference, take away, subtract, decrease and reduce. The words for multiplication are of, product, multiply, double, twice and times. The words for division are share equally, quotient, divide and half. These activities are a prerequisite for students to solve word problems. The key is included and the standard covered is: Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.
