Beyond the Jack-o'-Lantern Reading Passage and Q & A
ELA, Reading, Writing, Holiday & Seasonal, Resources for Teachers, Science, Life Sciences, Biology, High School, Homeschool Resources, Teacher Tools, Assessments, Lesson Plans, Quizzes and Tests, Worksheets & Printables, Writing Prompts
You know how it is as a homeschool mom - you are constantly on the hunt for something that will actually grab your teenager's attention for more than five minutes! Well, Beyond the Jack-o'-Lantern: The Biology and Culture of Pumpkins totally surprised me. I thought it might be just another fall-themed busy work packet, but wow, was I wrong. INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE: A detailed, multi-paragraph reading passage exploring pumpkin biology, history, culture, and nutrition. 20 higher-order thinking questions with an accompanying answer key for guided support. Printable note-taking and graphic organizer sheets to strengthen comprehension and study skills. Teacher-friendly design with easy-to-use formatting for both classroom and homeschool environments. TOPICS COVERED: Plant biology, anatomy, and the growth cycle of pumpkins. Ecological interdependence with pollinators and sustainable agriculture. Historical and cultural significance of pumpkins across societies. Nutritional benefits and interdisciplinary applications in STEAM education. My daughter picked this up thinking she'd breeze through some pumpkin facts, and before I knew it, she was down this rabbit hole learning about plant biology, cultural traditions, and agricultural history. She did not even complain once! (Trust me, that is saying something with a 9th grader.) What I love is that she has no clue she's doing this fancy "cross-curricular" learning - she is just genuinely fascinated. And can I just say how nice it is when a resource does not require me to spend hours figuring out how to teach it? Everything flows so naturally from one topic to the next. The other day she came to me with this question about how pumpkins spread to different continents, and I am thinking, "When did my kid start caring about agricultural migration patterns?" It is these moments that remind me exactly why we chose to homeschool. Taking something as ordinary as a pumpkin sitting on our porch and turning it into this amazing learning adventure - that is the good stuff right there. Sometimes the best lessons come from the most unexpected places! If you and your students/homeschoolers enjoyed this resource, please leave a review. Thank you for your support! Life of St. Valentine - Reading, Writing, Research Activities Pack
Biographies, Social Studies, History: Europe, History, Research, History: World, Valentine's Day, Holidays, Holiday & Seasonal, Elementary, Homeschool Resources, Pre-K, Projects, Activities, Centers, Writing Prompts, Worksheets & Printables, Word Searches, Worksheets, Crosswords Puzzles, Coloring Pages
My "Life of Saint Valentine" activity pack is designed to make it easy to teach students of all ages about the life of St. Valentine. My specific recommended age range is pre-k through 5th grade, though special education students of all ages will benefit as well. Of course, many older children enjoy coloring, so the coloring sheets can be used as a way to make the day more interesting, as a reward, or as a way to occupy busy minds after completing required assignments. Pre-readers will be able to participate by coloring the pages and can be guided by the teacher who can read the sentences and ask the questions verbally while the pre-reader is coloring the images on each page. Students who are reading and writing, or learning to read and write, will get further practice in developing their reading and writing skills. Students who are able will also be required to research the life of Saint Valentine. Students will learn about multiple historical Valentine persons, including one female. Students will not only develop research skills, but critical thinking skills as well, because many of the questions require them to think outside the box. Included in this activities pack: Challenging Crossword Puzzle with answer key included Not too easy Word Search with answer key included. 10 Coloring Pages, each with a question that can be answered verbally or in writing. Space is given for writing, or a separate sheet of paper may be used, depending on teacher preference. A Word Scramble Worksheet - Word Bank is included to help simplify if needed. Teacher could remove the word bank if they want to make it more challenging. Answer key is included. 5 Short Answer writing prompts as well as one 1-2 paragraph writing assignment. Students are asked to choose one of the Valentines to do further research. Reference/Resources page to help with research. While students are working on these activities, they will be increasing vocabulary because many of the words may be unfamiliar to them. Each page is bordered with a beautiful Valentines Day theme. See images for example. Total usable pages, including answer key and reference page: 21 pages, pdf downloadable, printable document, answer key included.

Roll up your sleeves (and maybe pass the gravy) with the Helping Hands Writing Prompt! This Thanksgiving activity encourages kids to think about how they can lend a hand, without accidentally dropping the turkey. Writing and drawing come together in this heartwarming and hilarious project that showcases the many ways we can help others during the holiday season. First, kids will reflect on all the ways they’ve been helpful, or could be helpful, this Thanksgiving. Will they set the table without sneak-eating the rolls? Offer to do the dishes instead of disappearing into a pumpkin pie coma? Or maybe their “helping hands” involve cheering up a cranky relative with a joke about turkeys crossing the road. Whatever their helping superpower, it’s time to put it into words. Next, the artistic fun begins! Kids will draw their very own “helping hands,” complete with doodles of their Thanksgiving good deeds. Add in some colorful crayons, markers, or glitter (if you dare), and these hands will be ready to hang on the fridge, the classroom wall, or right next to the dessert table for everyone to admire. Perfect for inspiring gratitude, creativity, and just a touch of turkey humor, this activity is all about making Thanksgiving more special, one helping hand at a time! Enjoy!
