So many students love reading dystopian, science fiction, and fantasy novels. Incorporating dystopian fiction, science fiction, and fantasy into students' literary experiences enriches their reading comprehension, critical thinking abilities, and capacity for empathy. These genres encourage students to explore the boundaries of the human imagination while engaging with thought-provoking ideas that are relevant to their lives and the world around them. They encourage critical thinking, speculation, empathy, awareness of different perspectives, imagination, creativity, and moral and ethical exploration.

You will find a detailed interactive standards-aligned lesson plan in which you and your students compare and contrast the 3 genres and their characteristics. The lesson plan includes objectives and learning targets, a variety of handouts and worksheets for students to deepen their understanding of the genres as well as the elements of fiction and how they play out in the genres. The directions for creating and then playing the board game are clear and easy to follow. Also included are daily accountability sheets for the students as they work in their groups to create the board game as well as a self-evaluation and a group evaluation of their process, their game board and the game boards of other groups. The best part of this unit is the day they get to play each others' games. As part of the game board evaluation, you, as their teacher, get to play their games as well. This highly creative project will engage your students and will encourage your students to creatively and critically "think outside the box" as they work collaboratively to create a game that best reflects their book.
