This document is available in black and white as well as in color. Actually, it combines both, making it more attractive for your students. COLOR SECONDARY AND COMPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: For what age, grade, or school level is it ideal? I usually create resources for early grades (children ages 3–5), but I also design for primary students (ages 7–12). My priority is to make children’s learning creative. Binary Mystery Pictures This is an extension activity used after the students have had several lessons on place value for base 2. They should have also had practice converting base 10 numbers using 0 and 1 to write numbers in base 2 (binary). The picture activity takes conversion one step further, having the student filling in each box as a 0 or 1, with a 1 represented by a shaded box. Converting the given numbers from base 10 to base 2 will reveal a pixelated image, as a computer would draw it on the screen. The grid is divided into 2 main sections (A and B), each with 8 smaller columns across. Notice the two columns of numbers along the grid to the left. The column of numbers on the left correspond to section A and the numbers on the right correspond to section B. Directions: 1. For each row, convert each base 10 number to base 2. Show your answer by shading in the appropriate boxes in the corresponding column. A shaded box represents that place value as a “1.” Example: In the grid below, the first row lists 0 and 0, so therefore, no boxes are shaded. In the second row in section A, 0 is listed so again no boxes in that section's row are shaded. In the second row, section B, 15 is shown. To represent 15 as an 8-digit binary number, you would shade the first four boxes from the right to represent “00001111” in the place values filled. 2. Continue converting numbers for each row until the picture is revealed.

Beginning Sound and Ending Sound Matching Game

Preschool and kindergarten students will have fun practicing phonological awareness skills by identifying the beginning sounds and ending sounds in words with these phonics matching cards. What is Included: In this phonics card set, there are 24 total cards, available in both color and black and white. Each set of cards makes 12 pairs of words with the same beginning sounds and ending sounds. Ways to Use: Concentration or Memory Game : Students will start the game by having all of the cards face down. Each student will take turns turning over 2 cards. If both the beginning sound and ending sound of both cards match, then the student keeps the pair. If they do not, then the student puts them back face down. The student with the most correct pairs wins. Find a Partner: The teacher starts by giving each student one of the picture cards. The students then look around at the cards the other students have to see if it matches their beginning sound and their ending sound. Once they find their match, then they found their partner. Students can simply work together to match the cards with the same beginning sound and ending sound. Pairs Included: bag - bug, bat - boat, crab - cab, dog - dig, fan - fin, hat - hut, log - leg, mop - map, night - net, rug - rag, sock - snake, vine - van Skills Assessed: This activity assesses students' abilities at identifying and matching beginning and ending sounds in single syllable words. This activity is a low prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. The cards just need to be printed out and cut apart. They can be laminated for durability if the teacher desires. The cards can be stores in a task box or pencil box for easy set up, clean up and storage options.

Encourage your middle school/intermediate math students to clearly explain their ideas about concepts (like ratio, area, and algebra) in complete sentences using appropriate vocabulary and relevant diagrams . These open-ended questions require students to explain how they figured out their answers or to judge options using their mathematic understanding. They are a great review of math concepts learned earlier in the year or in previous grades, and they allow students to practice critical thinking skills too. Percent Math Lesson: Calculating Taxes, Tips, and Sale Prices Here's a ready-to-go lesson for your middle school math unit on percentages. It encourages students to use multiple methods and mental math when calculating the tax, tip, or sale price for everyday transactions. This is one of the times you can easily say to your students, "You will use this math regularly in your life!" How to Use: Start with the handout, which goes through three simple methods for calculating percentages. Benchmark: An easy calculation strategy using familiar percentages like 1%, 10%, and 50%. Decimals: Calculating involves multiplying the amount by its matching decimal form percentage. Fractions: Division based on fraction equivalents is used for identifying certain percentage amounts. Tell your students that certain methods work best for certain situations. For example, the fraction method is great for 50% or 25% off. The benchmark method is easy when calculating a 10% tip. The time before the holidays can get a little crazy in the classroom. Students are ready for a break and teachers are too! Keep your class engaged with EIGHT Days of math review! The ACTIVITIES are suitable for 5th grade and 6th grade. They are great for easy and fast sub plans. I use them as an 'end of the day carrot' that my students look forward to. They can't leave for the day without getting a step closer to finding Santa so it helps them to stay focused throughout the day so that we have time for the fun activity at the end of the day. One of the best parts: NO PREP required! This is not only great for distance learning but also great if you have run out of copies for the month and need a digital version fast... or if you just forget to make your copies for the week. Butter Tart Recipe (based on my grandma's actual delicious family recipe!) Here is a real-life example to help students practice adding and multiplying mixed numbers and improper fractions. When students ask, "When will we ever use this in real-life?!" you can show them this lesson and say that working with fractions is so common in baking. This delicious activity will allow students to practice using fractions with a realistic everyday example: baking! Students will take a recipe that has several fractions in it and double it. Half a cup of something becomes a cup and 3/4 of a cup becomes 1 and a half cups. After that, they need to figure out how much of each ingredient would be needed if the recipe was made five times bigger (perhaps in a bakery setting or for a large event). I encourage my students to use different strategies to complete this task: drawing pictures with squares, repeated addition, or multiplication. Boxes for diagrams and math calculations are included to encourage students to show their work. You could even have different students come up to show their personal strategies to the rest of the class. As an extension, students can bring in their own recipes from home in the next class and double them or multiply them by five as well. You might even want to actually make something tasty to eat too! This middle school (grades 6-8) probability lesson and worksheet has three parts to help your class understand the probability of compound events (2 events that both occur but do not affect one another) and how to write probabilities as decimals and percentages. How it Works: There are two "casino games" presented. Each has two steps and specific rules. 1) Students first determine the theoretical probability (in fractions, decimals, or percents) of the casino game that has a spinner and a die and three different outcomes. 2) Students next determine the theoretical probability (in fractions, decimals or percents) of the casino game that has a penny and a die and three different outcomes. 3) Finally, students will compare the two games and pick which game they would choose to play using their math calculations as justification.
