Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 6

This Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 6 helps children to use their knowledge of common digraphs to read longer passages and apply their phonic knowledge to new vocabulary. This book is the sixth in a series of books written to provide intervention for struggling readers using decodable reading books, written to build confidence and help the child attain fluency. This book is useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even of 11+ who are struggling to read fluently, but who have a smattering of phonic knowledge but with gaps. It revises CK and OO words adding more commonly used decodable vocabulary giving the child a familiar base on which to build It follows: Book 1 CVC Words Book 2 Consonant Blends Words Book 3 More Consonant Blends Words Book 4 CK word Book 5 OO Words Who is this book for? Older pupils who can read, but who have a reading age well below their chronological age. Such children may struggle to read simple text with accuracy/fluency and thereby lack comprehension. It is not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my Graded reading books for such pupils. It is convenient enough for parents to use with their children and for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Having secured a child's blending skills with three and four sounds in books 1 to 3, and practised CK and OO words, we now start to extend the child's ability to decode new words using common digraphs. Assess the whole time as the child reads: if the child stumbles on a word, make a note to revise that phonic sound before continuing to the next book. As these children are not beginners, we now add words ending in /et/ (e.g. packet) and past tense words: rock - rocked. these should be studied before reading this book. I find that often these children need help distinguishing between similar words, such as back and black, and by retraining the child to read accurately using these simple texts - that do not look babyish - and then rebuilding from the bottom up, much progress can be made. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Simply print on A4 paper, two on a page. Cut into individual A5 pages, and staple or bind them together to make a book. Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills and have had years of failure. They must build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. These books, used as described, will help to build that foundation. I am finding an increasing number of such pupils desperate for help. You can help, too! The time before the holidays can get a little crazy in the classroom. Students are ready for a break and teachers are too! Keep your class engaged with EIGHT Days of math review! The ACTIVITIES are suitable for 5th grade and 6th grade. They are great for easy and fast sub plans. I use them as an 'end of the day carrot' that my students look forward to. They can't leave for the day without getting a step closer to finding Santa so it helps them to stay focused throughout the day so that we have time for the fun activity at the end of the day. One of the best parts: NO PREP required! This is not only great for distance learning but also great if you have run out of copies for the month and need a digital version fast... or if you just forget to make your copies for the week. (It's happened to me! - too. many things to keep track of) The pages do print beautiful in color and black and white if you have the time, but don't fret if you don't. Just assign it on Google Classroom - directions included. If you haven't taught the topic yet, it is a great mini lesson and if you have taught it, it can act as a review. Then you can let students work on the five other problems independently or in small groups. They could do some of the problems in class and a couple of them for homework. I have included a quick self- assessment at the end, so you can see which steps students are confident with and which are a bit more challenging. My students often struggle to think of an alternate method to solve the problem, so I can target some small group support for that skill. How to Use: 1) Each student will be assigned a monthly budget (from $1,700 all the way to $5,000). 2) They select one of three options (low, medium, pricey) for each spending category: housing, eating, transportation, technology, & clothing. They might find that they have to change their choices as they move through the process. Making sacrifices is part of budgeting in real life too! 3) Students add up the amounts they spend and calculate how much they can save per month (and throughout the entire year). 4) They pick what luxury option they would save for over time: a car, a video game system, a vacation, or a house. Everyone is talking about rising interest rates these days. But why does it matter? Should our students learn about this? Yes! Here's a complete ready-to-go lesson for high school students in math class, life skills, home economics, or career and personal planning. It will teach them all about buying a home, getting a mortgage, and how mortgage payments are calculated using interest rates. 1) First, there is a handout explaining all the relevant home-buying vocabulary: from down payment and mortgage to interest and principal. There is a complete handout or a fill-in-the-blanks version: you choose what is best for your students! 2) Then, there is a second sheet with a sample scenario of what happens when interest rates rise and people have to renew their mortgage. This clearly shows, step by step, how mortgage payments can rise by hundreds or thousands of dollars even if you live in the exact same place. Here’s an engaging 5th grade or 6th grade differentiated problem solving worksheet that includes several real-world math skills: o Conversions of standard measurements: millimetres to centimetres and centimetres to metres (5th Grade Measurement) o Calculating the volume of a rectangular prism that has whole number side lengths (5th Grade Measurement) o Multiplying & dividing by powers of ten (5th Grade Numbers in Base Ten) o Simple financial literacy (comparing prices) o Ratios and Rates (6th Grade Ratios and Proportional Relationships) Students will work on a realistic scenario: measuring boxes of sprinkles made at the sprinkle factory. Some are small for home use, and some are much larger for bakery and industrial applications. They will complete the following tasks for each box: Sketch the sprinkle box shape in 3-D with labelled measurements Complete simple and guided unit conversions on the measurements Calculate the exact volume of each box in centimetres cubed Determine the prices of each box using simple rates. This activity included three levels of difficulty: you can assign differing amounts to easily differentiate for your students, or complete the whole activity as a class, step-by-step. Level 1) Involves converting millimetres to centimetres and calculating the price and volume of the small box of sprinkles.
