Helping Students Reflect with Therapy Dogs 🐶💭 There’s something special about the presence of a therapy dog in the classroom. Even the most restless students seem to relax. Some kids who rarely speak up suddenly open up. And for many, it’s the first time they’ve had a chance to experience the unconditional support that a dog offers. But what if we took that experience and turned it into a learning moment? That’s exactly what this reflection activity does. It helps students think about what kindness means, why responsibility matters, and how their actions affect others—whether those others have two legs or four. Why This Activity Feels Different ✔ It gets students thinking, not just answering. It’s not about memorizing facts. It’s about pausing for a moment and reflecting on simple but meaningful questions. ✔ It connects emotions with actions. Why do therapy dogs have rules? Why does kindness matter? These questions lead to unexpectedly deep discussions. ✔ It’s easy for any grade level. Younger kids can draw their answers, while older students might write or discuss. No one feels left out. ✔ It works with or without a therapy dog. Even if your school doesn’t have one, this still sparks conversations about empathy and responsibility. ✔ No prep required. Just print it out, hand it to students, and let them think. How I Use It in My Classroom 📌 First, we talk. I ask, “How do animals teach us about kindness?” or “What do therapy dogs need from us?” The answers are never what I expect—and that’s the best part. 📌 Then, students reflect. They complete a few simple but thoughtful prompts about their own behavior, their emotions, and what they’ve learned. 📌 Next, we share (if they want to). I never make sharing mandatory. But I’m always surprised by how many students want to. 📌 Finally, we put up the poster. It’s a small reminder that kindness and responsibility go beyond the classroom. 🐶 One more idea: If you have a therapy dog visit your class, have students read their reflections to the dog. You’d be amazed at how much more open and engaged they become! For 3rd Grade Health there are seven standards that need to be taught. Unit 1 Personal Health Unit 2 Growth and Development Unit 3 Nutrition and Physical Activity Unit 4 Substance Use and Abuse Unit 5 Injury/ Violence Prevention Control and Safety Unit 6 Prevention/Control of Disease Unit 7 Environmental Consumer Health These units can be taught out of order. They are only numbered for your convenience. At the end of each unit, there is an assessment to test students’ understanding. In this unit, students will discuss and learn about healthy and unhealthy physical activities. They will discuss with the group what they think happens to their body when they are running, what causes our bodies to sweat and make our heartbeat faster and how long it takes for our bodies to recover. They will even perform some physical activities as a group and monitor what is happening to their bodies. Students will also read about healthy and unhealthy habits they do during the day. Such unhealthy habits they will read about include watching TV, playing video games, or laying around instead of doing physical activities such as skateboarding, swimming, and other activities that are good for our heart. There is a goal sheet included that will help students monitor how they can get more physical activity into their daily routines. After completing the goal sheet, they will compare it to other classmates and even improve on their physical goals that they want to accomplish. In the unit, there is a worksheet about making healthy eating habits. What foods kids should avoid like sugary sweets, greasy foods, chips and sodas. Student will discuss the consequences of eating unhealthy foods verses eating healthy options. Lastly, there is a worksheet on the importance of sleep. How much sleep kids need at their age and why it's important to go to bed on time each night. There are 13 pages included in all. In the end, there is an assignment to test for understanding. There are seven units that cover all the health requirements for 3rd grade. In this SEL product, you will get SEL Flashcards for Social Emotional Learning. You will also get SEL coloring pages because there are two different pages of emotions/feelings. Both pages have a black and white version and a color version. The black and white version allows your students to color their own faces and images. The emotions listed are; happy, sad, silly, proud, shy confused, scared, excited, angry, tired, loving, sick, disgusted, cry, jealous, disappointed. These flashcards can be used for so many purposes. I have used these flashcards for Go Fish games where the students have to ask for a certain feeling. You will need to make two copies of the colored emotions poster to make this game work. If a student asks for "angry" and the student they asked has it, that student give the card to the one who asked and that student places the match down on the table and names a time they felt angry. I have also used this resource for memory games. You would, again, make two copies of each emotion. Then you would mix up the cards and place them face down (I would highly recommend cardstock) in a random order. Students then would choose two cards and reveal the emotion cards. If they are a match, then the student can share when they have felt that way. If it is not a match, they would place the cards face down again the the next student would take a turn. This is a fun and interactive game but also helps students discuss their feelings in a non-threatening way. This resource can be used as a whole class activity where students color their flashcards and then cut them out. They can randomly pick a card and name a time they felt that way. This can also be used as a center activity for Go Fish or Memory (as I described above). The ways to use these Emotion SEL Flashcards are endless!

The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Cooperation Scavenger Hunt-An SEL Game

In this SEL game, students will learn and practice cooperation skills. They will be in groups of 3-4 and they will do a cooperation scavenger hunt together. There are 5 tasks for them to complete. They can complete these in any order they wish. There is a find the hidden objects tasks where students will work together to find the hidden objects in the picture. This resource contains 2 different hidden objects sheets to choose from or you could offer both types for the task. There is a task where the group will create a team name. Another task is about creating a special handshake made up of 6 moves. Another task of for the group to come up with 5 things they all have in common. Lastly, there is a task where they will do 10 jumping jacks or wall push-ups all together. This is a very fun, engaging SEL activity where there is a mix of physical movement, concentration, creativity and more. This activity is great for students in grades 2nd-5th. At the end of the activity, students can share their special handshakes, their team names, what 5 things they have in common with one another. It is also a time to discuss what type of cooperation skills were used in this activity.
