Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Read a small set of emoji symbols as a clue and work out the game title they stand for

  • Recall the names of sixteen widely known board and card games

Teaching tips

  • Sixteen puzzles on one sheet make this a short filler for the end of a lesson, a first-day icebreaker or an early-finisher task

  • Run it in pairs or small teams - a student who has never played Snakes and Ladders or Hungry Hippo will often get the title from a partner

  • Hold the solutions page back until everyone has finished, then use it to run through the sixteen answers in the printed order

  • The Name line means the sheet can be collected, though it works equally well projected and solved together as a class

Skills covered

  • Visual inference - students interpret a small group of emoji symbols as a clue to a name rather than reading the answer in words.

  • Symbol-to-word thinking - each puzzle asks students to connect pictures with the sounds or ideas inside a familiar title such as Mouse Trap or Go Fish.

  • General knowledge of classic games - the sixteen titles span board and card games from Chess and Monopoly to Uno and Candy Land.
