This is an Addition and Subtraction Strategies Homework Packet designed for your 3rd grade classroom.

I hope this pack is what you’ve been looking for. I use it as my 5 weeks of addition and subtraction strategies homework, but it would also work well as a workbook or as supplementary worksheets to whatever program you’re teaching in class. There are other addition and subtraction strategies out there. These are the strategies I’ve found to be the easiest to use and understand.

Here is a breakdown of strategies by the week.

WEEK ONE:

-Decomposition (or split) Strategy

-Number Line (or jump) Strategy

-Use EITHER OR of the first two strategies

-Word problem solving using any strategy

WEEK TWO:

-Friendly Number Strategy

-Compensation Strategy

-Use EITHER OR of the first two strategies

WEEK THREE:

-Transformation Strategy

-Number Line (or jump) Strategy

-Use EITHER OR of the first two strategies

-Word problem solving using any strategy

WEEK FOUR:

-Separation (or breaking apart) Strategy

-Subtracting From Nines Strategy

-Use EITHER OR of the first two strategies

-Word problem solving using any strategy

WEEK FIVE:

-Students will have 4 practice pages to use any strategy of their choice.

Every page included in this packet will provide students with the space they need to solve the problems.

Each strategy will come with an example problem already completed for students to reference as they apply that strategy to the other problems on the page.

It would be great to use these pages as an informal assessment (whether you decide to use them as homework or not). You can always pull students in small groups and watch as they solve these problems and provide the necessary support for students.
