April Reading Comprehension Packet

About This Resource:

These reading passages are designed to teach and reinforce reading skills in a fun, timely manner by acknowledging interesting national days of recognition. There are four reading passages in this set. Each passage has four accompanying activities: vocabulary practice, comprehension questions, reading skill graphic organizers, and a written response.

How to Use This Resource:

I recommend breaking each text’s activities up into 5 different lessons.

• Day 1: Read the text for comprehension. Work with students to make connections to the text, annotate the text, and determine the gist of the text.

• Day 2: Reread the text and use context clues to determine the meaning of the vocabulary words.

• Day 3: Reread the text for fluency and to find the answers to the comprehension questions. I suggest reading the questions before rereading the text.

• Day 4: Teach the reading skill that accompanies the corresponding graphic organizer and complete the graphic organizer. Refer to the text to find the details and examples needed for the graphic organizer.

• Day 5: Provide time for students to complete their written response and discuss their responses with their peers. You may choose to have students formally publish their work or turn it in as-is for an exit ticket or quick assessment of reading comprehension and writing skills.

Answer Keys:

Answer keys are included but student answers are likely to vary. Please be sure to review answers with students to increase their comprehension of the text and understanding of the reading skill being taught.
