About this resource

What's inside this resource

Twelve month labels, January through December, are laid out on one page in calendar order, reading left to right across six rows. Every label is the same 3.5 × 1-inch rectangle with a dashed cutting border, a large bold month name and a soft lavender, mint or yellow background.

One extra piece, a "This month →" marker, cuts out the same way. Set it to the left of the current month on your calendar and slide it down as the year moves on. The sheet's directions say to print at 100% (actual size) and display the months in order, starting with January. Because the labels carry no seasonal pictures, they suit any calendar wall, pocket chart, bulletin board or sorting tray.

  • Classroom calendars: big, plainly spelled month words for elementary displays
  • One sheet: all twelve months and a movable current-month marker
  • Two files: bright pastel labels or a low-ink black and white set

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Read the names of the twelve months.

  • Put the months of the year in calendar order.

  • Identify the current month on a classroom calendar.

Teaching tips

  • Print at actual size (100%) so the labels come out at 3.5 × 1 inch and line up evenly.

  • Post the labels in order starting with January, as the sheet directs, so students see the full year in sequence.

  • Move the This month marker at the start of each month and ask a student to read the new month name aloud.

Skills covered

  • Month names: students see each month spelled out in large, consistent type.

  • Calendar sequence: the labels are designed to hang in order, so the class can say the months from January to December.

  • Tracking time: the movable marker shows which month it is now and where it falls in the year.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

What size are the month labels?

Each label is 3.5 × 1 inch when printed at 100%. The This month marker is the same width and a little shorter.

Are there pictures on the labels?

No. The labels show only the month names on colored backgrounds, so they work in any season and with any calendar layout.

How does the This month marker work?

Cut it out and place it to the left of the current month. Move it to the next label when the month changes.

Can I print it without color?

Yes. A print-friendly black and white PDF is included alongside the full-color copy.
