Single vs Dual Income Budget: High School Financial Literacy Budgeting

This high school financial literacy project lets your students tackle a real-world budgeting decision families make: should both parents work, or should one stay home to do childcare? Students will use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they work with these realistic budgets (single income budget vs dual income budget). This task can show your students in 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade how financial literacy and math skills can be incredibly useful in everyday life! How to Use: Print five pages for each student. Go through the first page together and introduce the family in the simulation. Students use the income and income tax information to calculate the net income. Give students time to add up the monthly expenses in each budget (single-income vs dual-income). Discuss what expenses change when both parents work and if those seem reasonable or not. Have students complete the calculations to compare the two budgets on the fourth page. NOTE: In this simulation, there is almost no difference in money left over if both parents work since the extra income is used to pay for childcare, a second car, a cleaner, etc. That does not mean this is always the case! Use the prompts on the fifth page to have a class discussion about this topic. Then, students write their final opinion in a paragraph to sum up their learning. They may have ideas for how to change this budget or scenario to make having both parents work be more financially beneficial. I have included blank spreadsheets as well if you want your students to create their own budgets using salaries and expenses from your geographical area. In this SEL presentation, students will learn about the "core four" as a way to figure out how someone else is feeling. This is the building block of empathy and understanding how someone is feeling. This product has a 12 slide Google Slides Presentation with the last 4 slides as handouts and activities for the lesson plan. Students will understand that the core four is looking at the key 4 body parts; the eyes, eyebrows, mouth and hands. They will analyze 4 pictures of real people and guess how they are feeling based on the core four. After they analyze the real children, they will play a game of charades with partners or in groups. There are 6 different emotions to act out-each have an emoji as well as the feeling word. No reading is required. Then there are 2 extension SEL worksheets. One is identifying what people are feeling in a picture, they will circle the feeling word and write down which part of the core four helped them figure it out. The next handout is a fun Find the 9 Differences in an emoji picture. The answer is on the following slide. This lesson is good for pre-k, kindergarten, first and second grades. Helping Students Reflect with Therapy Dogs 🐶💭 There’s something special about the presence of a therapy dog in the classroom. Even the most restless students seem to relax. Some kids who rarely speak up suddenly open up. And for many, it’s the first time they’ve had a chance to experience the unconditional support that a dog offers. But what if we took that experience and turned it into a learning moment? That’s exactly what this reflection activity does. It helps students think about what kindness means, why responsibility matters, and how their actions affect others—whether those others have two legs or four. Why This Activity Feels Different ✔ It gets students thinking, not just answering. It’s not about memorizing facts. It’s about pausing for a moment and reflecting on simple but meaningful questions. ✔ It connects emotions with actions. Why do therapy dogs have rules? Why does kindness matter? These questions lead to unexpectedly deep discussions. ✔ It’s easy for any grade level. Younger kids can draw their answers, while older students might write or discuss. No one feels left out. ✔ It works with or without a therapy dog. Even if your school doesn’t have one, this still sparks conversations about empathy and responsibility. ✔ No prep required. Just print it out, hand it to students, and let them think. How I Use It in My Classroom 📌 First, we talk. I ask, “How do animals teach us about kindness?” or “What do therapy dogs need from us?” The answers are never what I expect—and that’s the best part. 📌 Then, students reflect. They complete a few simple but thoughtful prompts about their own behavior, their emotions, and what they’ve learned. 📌 Next, we share (if they want to). I never make sharing mandatory. But I’m always surprised by how many students want to. 📌 Finally, we put up the poster. It’s a small reminder that kindness and responsibility go beyond the classroom. 🐶 One more idea: If you have a therapy dog visit your class, have students read their reflections to the dog. You’d be amazed at how much more open and engaged they become! It's a crucial life skill that is often not taught in school. Here’s a real-life math lesson that will be a great addition to your middle school graphing unit! Students are shown three unique and realistic graphs Each one presents information in a biased or misleading way. With step-by-step instructions, your students will be guided through the basics: 1) Carefully reading and interpreting each graph: the axes, the scales, the data that is included 2) Noticing any biases or manipulations that may be present 3) Determining what the author probably wanted to guide them to think when reading the initial graph On the second page for each situation, students are given extra information and tasked with re-creating the graph more fairly.
