Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Students can read and recognise eleven -at family words, from simple CVC words to blends like flat and splat.
Students can sort or group -at words by shared spelling pattern using the printed cards.
Teaching tips
Post the cards on a word wall in order of difficulty, starting with three-letter words like bat and cat before adding blends such as flat, splat, and chat.
Use the second identical set of cards for a matching or memory game, since two full sets of the same eleven words are included.
Laminate the cards for durability, since they are meant to stay posted or be handled repeatedly rather than written on.
Skills covered
Word family pattern recognition — reading multiple -at words to reinforce the shared rime.
Word wall reference use — using posted cards as an ongoing spelling and reading reference during independent writing.
Word matching — pairing identical words from the two included sets for a matching or memory-style game.
