Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Match a two-digit multiple of ten to the correct number of ten-groups.

  • State that a number like 50 represents five tens and zero ones.

Teaching tips

  • Use as a self-checking maths centre -- students match cards independently since a mismatched pair would look visually wrong.

  • Extend a completed 10-90 set by asking students to predict what card would come next (100, then 110, 120).

  • Introduce the 'Numbers 11-19' portion of the set separately from the tens-matching cards to avoid conflating teen numbers with multiples of ten.

Skills covered

  • Place-value understanding of tens -- students match number cards (10, 20, 30 ... 120) to sets representing that many groups of ten.

  • Skip counting by tens -- students work with the sequence 10, 20, 30 ... 100, 120 as they sort and match cards.
