Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Sing a syllable-aligned melody line in F major through repeated statements of a chorus and into a second, contrasting section
Accompany a vocal line from a written two-stave piano part rather than from a lead sheet
Read and play chord symbols that go beyond triads into sevenths, a ninth, thirteenths, a suspension and an augmented chord
Teaching tips
Chord symbols sit above every system, so a guitarist or bass player can join straight from this score without a separate chart being written out.
The harmony reaches Gm9, C13 and Ab13; a player who reads only basic triads will get more from the written piano staves than from the symbols alone.
The Solo markings on score pages 4 and 7 fall where the arrangement returns to the opening chorus, which makes them the natural places to feature a single voice before the full setting comes back.
The two choruses are joined without a break, so rehearse and programme the score as one continuous item rather than as two separate songs.
Skills covered
Vocal line reading — singers follow a syllable-aligned lyric, "Ev-'ry-bod-y ought to know, who Je-sus is", under the melody in F major.
Chord-symbol reading — accompanists work from symbols that run past triads into sevenths, a ninth, thirteenths, a suspension and an augmented chord.
Two-hand keyboard accompaniment — the piano part is written out on treble and bass staves across all eleven pages rather than left to improvisation.
Medley performance — players carry the opening chorus straight into "He Is Lord" and follow the Solo markings for the changes of texture along the way.
