About this resource

Practise fifteen health and hygiene terms with a word search, word scramble and crossword. The word list is Hygiene, Germ, Wash Hands, Brush Teeth, Shower, Sanitiser, Soap, Vaccine, Exercise, Sleep, Stress, Deodorant, Floss, Sunscreen and Mask.

Three two-page PDFs each pair a puzzle with its completed key, for six pages total. Use the crossword and scramble clues to discuss meanings, then revisit word recognition with the search. The set works for individual or partner vocabulary practice.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Recognise and spell health and hygiene vocabulary words from short descriptive clues

  • Unscramble letters to reconstruct health and hygiene vocabulary words

  • Locate health and hygiene vocabulary words within a letter grid using a word bank

Teaching tips

  • Use the crossword first since its clues require students to connect meaning to each word, then follow with the word scramble and word search as lower-stakes reinforcement of the same vocabulary list

  • Preview words students are less likely to know by sight, such as Sanitiser or Deodorant, before assigning the crossword, since its clues rely on inferring the word from a short description rather than simple recall

  • Assign the word search as an independent quiet-time activity and save the crossword for partner or small-group work where students can talk through the clues together

Skills covered

  • Vocabulary acquisition — students learn the meaning and spelling of fifteen health and hygiene terms across three puzzle formats.

  • Inferential reading — students match short descriptive clues to the correct vocabulary word to complete the crossword.

  • Visual scanning and word recognition — students locate whole words within a letter grid for the word search.

  • Spelling and letter-order reconstruction — students unscramble jumbled letters to rebuild each vocabulary word.
