About this resource

This resource is a Moral of the Story Graphic Organiser.

Students can use this graphic organiser when they are reading a text.

It allows students to write out the plot of the story.

At the bottom, students will write what they think is the moral of the story and they can provide text evidence to support it.

This can be printed in colour or black and white.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Summarise a story's plot by separating its Beginning, Middle and End into distinct parts.

  • State the moral, lesson or central message of a story.

  • Support a stated moral with specific evidence drawn from the text.

Teaching tips

  • Use one of the two identical copies as a colour version and the other as a black-and-white version, since the layout repeats exactly across both pages (pages 1-2).

  • Model filling out the Beginning/Middle/End plot boxes with a familiar story before asking students to state the moral, since the plot section is positioned above the moral section.

  • Pair this organiser with fables, folktales or other morals-driven texts, since the template is built specifically around identifying and supporting a story's moral rather than general comprehension.

Skills covered

  • Plot sequencing — students separate a story into its Beginning, Middle and End in three distinct labelled spaces (pages 1-2).

  • Theme/moral identification — students state what they judge to be the moral of the story in a dedicated Moral column (pages 1-2).

  • Evidence-based reasoning — students cite specific text evidence to support the moral they identified, using the paired Text Evidence column (pages 1-2).
