About this resource
This packet has four student activity pages and a cover, for use with a suitable teacher-selected movie. It provides structured viewing responses for a prepared substitute lesson.
The movie worksheets require students to respond to the movie every 10 minutes with a summary, character analysis, or questions such as...
-What events happened in this section? Have you experienced anything like that?
-Do you agree/disagree with the message of this section?
-What can you learn from this section and how can you apply it to your life?
-A summary of the section
-What you liked the best/worst in that section
-What characters were in this section? Are you like them in any way?
There are 6 different question prompts for students to use to guide their answers. This is a great way to differentiate by expecting students to answer different questions or to utilise vocabulary words in the responses.
The final page of the packet is an open area for students to doodle and fill with words and pictures about the theme of the video. Prepare the movie and selected prompts before leaving the lesson for a substitute.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Summarise a section of a film in writing.
Analyse a character's traits or personal connection to a scene.
State and justify an opinion about the film's message.
Synthesise the film's overall theme in words and images.
Teaching tips
Pause the film at consistent roughly-ten-minute intervals so students have a natural stopping point for writing.
Assign or rotate which of the six prompts students respond to at each pause to vary the task.
Keep a copy on hand as a standing sub-plan resource since the prompts are not tied to any one movie title.
Skills covered
Film-based summarisation — students condense each roughly ten-minute segment into a short written summary.
Character analysis — students identify character traits or personal connections within a scene.
Opinion writing with justification — students state agreement or disagreement with the film's message and explain why.
Thematic synthesis — students distill the film's overall theme into words and images on the closing page.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
Can the same worksheet be reused for different movies?
Yes — the six response prompts are written generically enough to fit any film, so the packet works as a standing sub-plan resource rather than one tied to a specific title.
