Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • State an opinion, support it with reasons and examples/evidence, and restate the opinion using different words.

  • Organise an opinion piece using the OREO structure (Opinion, Reason, Example, Opinion) before drafting full sentences or paragraphs.

  • Expand a single reason/example pair into multiple supporting reasons and pieces of evidence using the second layout.

Teaching tips

  • Start with Layout 1's single reason/example structure for students newer to opinion writing, then move to Layout 2's three-reason structure as they gain fluency.

  • Make a personal copy of the Google Doc before editing, since the shared link opens as read-only until a copy is made.

  • Use the organiser as a pre-writing step before students draft a full opinion paragraph or essay, rather than as the final written product.

Skills covered

  • Opinion-writing structure — students organise an opinion, supporting reasons, and evidence using the OREO framework before drafting full text.

  • Evidence-based reasoning — Layout 2 requires students to pair each of three reasons with matching supporting evidence.

  • Restating an argument — both layouts end with a restate-the-opinion box, prompting students to reword their opening claim.
