About this resource

These classic stories are a fun way to practice printing and handwriting. Put together booklets for them to trace and then illustrate their own book. What better way to allow your students to practise their handwriting than to give them something they want to write and read?!? This is fantastic resource to have on hand for your emerging writers. This resource is ideal for Foundation – Year 2 students.

How To Use This:

Use these 6 story templates to help your students practise their printing. Each story has a cover page and a story with the story to trace on guided handwriting lines. Your students will enjoy practising their handwriting while creating a story to share with others. Students will also get to add their own illustration to each page to practice text to picture connection. Staple all the pages together and have your students share their books with their fellow students and family.

This product can be used independently. It may be something you decide to allow students to work on as an early finisher activity. It would also be beneficial to save these pages for writing or reading centres. Whether they are working in small groups with you or with classmates, encourage them to use their best handwriting!

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Practice printing letters and words on guided handwriting lines by tracing a familiar fairy tale

  • Build text-to-picture connection by illustrating each traced page to match the story content

Teaching tips

  • Assign one tracing page per day rather than a whole booklet at once, since the introductory page describes the activity as a multi-day project that ends with a complete, shareable storybook.

  • Staple each booklet together before handing it out, since a construction note ("Staple the booklet together here") appears on every page of every story.

Skills covered

  • Letter and word tracing — students trace guided-line handwriting for two to five sentences per page across each booklet.

  • Story sequencing — each booklet's pages move a familiar fairy tale from its opening line through its own "The End" page in order.

  • Text-to-picture connection — students illustrate each page next to the traced text as they complete it.
