About this resource

I made this tree puzzle set for my Year 3 students during our plant unit. Fifteen tree names recur in a word search, scramble and crossword, including oak, maple, pine, fir, spruce, cedar, birch, willow, ash, elm, beech, hickory, walnut, chestnut and redwood.

The download contains three two-page PDFs, each with a student puzzle followed by its completed key. The word search works for quiet practice; try the crossword with partners and use its identifying clues for discussion.

For an extension, ask early finishers to pick a tree and draw its leaf on the back.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify 15 common tree names from a short descriptive clue, such as 'Acorn tree' for Oak or 'Fragrant wood' for Cedar.

  • Unscramble jumbled letters to spell each tree name correctly.

  • Locate all 15 tree names hidden within a letter grid.

Teaching tips

  • Assign the three puzzles across separate sessions rather than all at once, since each reuses the same 15 tree names and clues in a different format.

  • Use the crossword's clue wording, such as 'Vase shape tree' for Elm, as a quick class discussion starter on identifying features before assigning the word scramble.

  • Save the word search for independent or quiet-time work, since it requires no clue-reading, only visual scanning.

Skills covered

  • Tree-name vocabulary recognition — students match 15 tree names to short identifying clues across all three puzzles.

  • Letter unscrambling — students reorder jumbled letters into the correct tree name using the paired clue (word scramble).

  • Visual word-search scanning — students locate all 15 tree names hidden in a letter grid.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Are the three puzzles independent, or do they build on each other?

They're independent puzzles that all reuse the same 15 tree names and clue set, so any one can be assigned on its own without the others.
