Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Classify familiar objects and phenomena (stars, sun, moon, clouds, animals) as visible in the day sky, night sky, or both.
Create a daytime/nighttime pattern using picture cards.
Organize sorted pictures under labelled anchor chart categories for a classroom display.
Teaching tips
Precut the sorting cards before class if working with Junior Kindergarten or kindergarten students who aren't yet ready for independent cutting.
Post the anchor chart labels on a bulletin board first, then have students add their own sorted pictures as a whole-class or small-group activity.
Use the foldable as an interactive-notebook page once students have completed the sorting activity, reinforcing the same Day Sky/Night Sky categories in a second format.
Skills covered
Classification — students sort eight objects into Day Sky, Night Sky, or Both categories based on when each is visible.
Pattern creation — students build a daytime/nighttime pattern using cut-out pictures.
Fine motor practice — cutting and pasting pictures across the sorting and pattern activities.
