Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Generate personal reflective content in response to sentence starters (e.g., "I wonder," "I feel," "I dream").
Structure a poem using a repeated refrain line built from two self-chosen characteristics.
Distinguish between a brainstorming/planning draft and a finished poem, per the page's explicit note.
Teaching tips
Remind students, per the sheet's own note, that this is a planning page and their final poem should be copied out separately.
Model choosing two personal characteristics first, since that phrase repeats as the refrain closing all three stanzas.
Read a few completed "I Am" poems aloud as mentor texts before students fill in the sentence starters, since the template itself provides no example responses.
Skills covered
Reflective self-expression — students respond to prompts like "I wonder," "I feel," and "I dream" to describe themselves.
Refrain-based poem structuring — students repeat a self-chosen two-characteristic line at the end of each stanza.
Draft-to-final revision awareness — students use the sheet as a planning stage before writing a polished poem.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
Each stanza ends with instructions to repeat "the first line of the poem" — does that mean the very same line all three times, or does it vary per stanza?
It's the same line throughout: students choose one "I am ______, ______" line at the very start and repeat that identical line to close all three stanzas, creating one refrain for the whole poem.
