Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Students will define a coordinate plane and identify its x-axis, y-axis, and origin.
Students will locate the coordinates of a plotted point using its x- and y-coordinate.
Students will plot a given ordered pair on the coordinate plane.
Teaching tips
Have students number a sheet of paper 1-10 before the final review section, as the slideshow itself instructs, so they can respond before each answer slide appears.
Pause on the point-B example (8 units right, 3 units up) to reinforce that the x-coordinate is read before the y-coordinate, since several students plot the values in the wrong order.
Preview the closing slide's mention of the next lesson (graphing patterns and figures) to set expectations for how this coordinate-plane skill will be extended.
Skills covered
Coordinate plane construction — students identify how a horizontal and vertical number line intersect to form the x-axis, y-axis, and origin.
Ordered pair plotting — students graph a given point, such as (1,5) or (0,3), by counting the correct number of units right and up from the origin.
Coordinate identification — students name the ordered pair of a point already plotted on the grid.
