About this resource

In the classroom
Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Write words that belong to a given word family (e.g., -at, -en, -ig, -op, -ug)
Match a picture to the word-family word it represents
Teaching tips
Introduce one word-family page at a time rather than assigning all five at once, since each page is a self-contained practice set
Have students say each word aloud as they write it, reinforcing the shared ending sound within a family before moving to the picture-matching step
Use the cover page's name line to assemble completed pages into a single take-home booklet once all five families are done
Skills covered
Word-family writing — students write words that share a common ending sound and spelling pattern (e.g., -at, -ug).
Picture-to-word matching — students connect a picture to the written word-family word it represents.
Phonics pattern recognition — students work with five different single-syllable word families across the book.
