Nonfiction vs. Fiction – Comparison Anchor Charts

A two-column chart pairs nonfiction features — real, fact-based, read to learn, table of contents, index, glossary, bold words — against fiction features — not real, story-based, read to enjoy, characters, setting, problem/solution. The chart appears once fully completed and once with key words blanked out for recall practice. Two identical genre-identification worksheets follow, each asking students to state whether a text is fiction or nonfiction and give two supporting reasons.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify defining features of nonfiction texts (real, fact-based, table of contents, index, glossary, bold words) versus fiction texts (not real, story-based, characters, setting, problem/solution)

  • Determine whether a given text is fiction or nonfiction and cite two pieces of supporting evidence for the determination

Teaching tips

  • Use the completed chart (page 1) for initial instruction, then the fill-in version (page 2) as a recall check.

  • Pair the genre-identification worksheet with two different texts, since two identical copies are included (pages 3-4).

Skills covered

  • Genre feature comparison — students distinguish nonfiction features (facts, table of contents, index) from fiction features (characters, setting, problem/solution).

  • Evidence-based genre determination — the worksheet asks students to justify a fiction/nonfiction classification with two supporting reasons.
