Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Students will answer a text-based question using the R.A.C.E. strategy: restating key words, answering all parts, citing evidence, and explaining their answer.
Students will locate and quote specific evidence from a short informational passage to support a written answer.
Students will explain, in their own words, how their cited evidence supports their answer to the question.
Teaching tips
Model the R.A.C.E. strategy using the volcano example on the reference page before assigning the first animal worksheet.
Use the checklist boxes (R, A, C, E) printed on each worksheet to have students self-monitor which step they've completed as they write.
Since each worksheet stands alone with its own short passage, assign them individually across the week rather than all six in one sitting.
Skills covered
Citing textual evidence — quoting directly from a short passage to support a written answer, using sentence starters like 'According to the text, it says...'
Restating and answering fully — identifying keywords from the question and confirming all parts of a multi-part question are addressed.
Explaining reasoning — connecting cited evidence back to the question with a concluding explanation sentence.
