CRQ: On Industrialization, Regents Global 10 + Video Lessons
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 10, Teacher Tools, Assessments

CRQ: On Industrialization, Regents Global 10 + Video Lessons This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. The reason for this mistake is that, since they were little kids, teachers have asked them to relate what a text means to prove they understood it. [ Read more at the Innovation blog ] Product includes: 1. Student version 2. Teacher version with suggested answers 3. Passcode to video lessons students can use to prepare the task. Documents: Letter from Leeds Cloth Merchants, 1791 Friedrich Engels, industrial Manchester, 1844 The Physical Deterioration of Textile Workers Cartoon, Punch, 1841, [who is hurt by a strike] Passcode Lessons: The Agricultural Revolution Begins in England Industrial Revolution Industrial Revolution Quiz The Irish Potato Famine About Innovation Passcodes Passcodes let your students access selected lessons in my own virtual classroom at InnovationAssessments.com . UR: Phonics Workbook Reading Made Simple
Phonics, Language Development, ELA, Spelling, Kindergarten, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Reading Made Simple — Free UR Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Reading Made Simple for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. Tested by real children: One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. These little workbooks are just one small part of what there is to offer. Please do check out the website for more information. Each workbook offers a gentle mix of activities built around the target sound. Children will read short passages that practise the new sound alongside words from sounds already taught, track and identify the sound within words to support both reading and spelling, practise spelling and sentence writing, and work through simple editing exercises where they spot and correct mistakes. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. The answer page at the back is optional. One sheet of paper. One sound. Everything a child needs to practise, consolidate and grow in confidence.

Primary Writing Rating Scale: Checklist Assessment for Grammar, Spelling, Ideas

Primary Writing Rating Scale: Checklist Assessment for Grammar, Spelling, Ideas
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Language Development, Spelling, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, Teacher Tools, Assessments

The Primary Writing Rating Scale: Checklist Assessment for Grammar, Spelling, Ideas Here is a ready-to-print writing assessment for your students in grades 1-4. It's a simple checklist that you can use multiple times throughout the year to assess your students' writing skills in several areas. Skills Assessed: Spaces between words Uppercase letter to start a sentence Uppercase letter for proper nouns End marks Commas Apostrophes Proper letter formation Proper letter size Correct spelling for common sight words Correct spelling for phonetically spelled words Reasonable invented spelling for difficult words Grammatically correct sentences Ideas link together in a logical order For each skill you have the option of checking off: Not present Less than half More than half Always present How to Use: Assign your students a writing task such as retelling a common fairy tale, writing about a favourite memory, or writing an informative paragraph about an animal they have studied. Then go through each student's writing sample and use the checklist. This will give you valuable information about which topics the whole class may need more instruction on (perhaps many students are struggling with commas) and it will provide information about which students in particular may need some targeted writing intervention. If you use the checklist throughout the year, it can show student growth and improvement. What's Included: A one-page rating scale for Primary Writing that assesses: Spaces between words Uppercase letters to start a sentence and for proper nouns End marks, commas, apostrophes Letter formation and size Spelling for sight words and phonetically spelled words Grammar Logical organization Grades to Use With: This scale can be used in primary classrooms from grades 1-4. At the younger levels, you may choose to only use some of the assessment rows (based on what your students have been taught). By grade 4, students should be able to tackle most or all of the skills in the checklist.
