DOUBLING SPELLING RULE - 1:1:1 RULE with suffix -ing

DOUBLING SPELLING RULE - 1:1:1 RULE with suffix -ing
ELA, Language Development, ESL, Grammar, Spelling, Strategies, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

1:1:1 Spelling Rule Practice Worksheet The 1-1-1 doubling rule plays a crucial role in English spelling, especially for upper-grade students. This rule is important because of the consistency. Unlike many other spelling rules, the 1-1-1 rule is very consistent. It helps students understand when to double the final consonant before adding vowel suffixes like “-ed” or “-ing. Mastering this rule enables students to move from reading and spelling shorter words to tackling longer, multisyllabic words with understanding and confidence. Objective: This spelling worksheet focuses on the 1:1:1 spelling rule and the practice of doubling consonants when adding the vowel suffix-ing. The goal is not memorization but understanding the rule’s application. Students will work with 18 words then will choose 3 from the list, and create an original sentence with the suffix “-ing. Grades: Upper elementary (helpful diagnostic spelling tool for older students) Implementation Ideas: Ideal for word work practice- learning stations for independent practice. Grammar Lessons: Use during parts of speech discussions. ELLs: learning morphemes. Assessment: Check understanding of the “-ing” suffix and the doubling spelling rule. Word Challenges: Challenge students to use the same word list and add the suffix -ed, what happens? Act out the words: Encourage students to act out words that are happening right now, for example: clapping, digging, and drinking Lesson extension: make it more interactive by creating word sorts, puzzles, and word-building games to reinforce the 1:1:1 rule. Instead of using this as a normal worksheet, consider having students show thumbs up or thumbs down in a group setting to indicate whether each word in the wordlist follows the 1:1:1 rule. File Type: PDF (3 pages) Use this worksheet to reinforce spelling skills and understanding!

Shakespeare Text Messages: Comprehension and Reflection for ANY Shakespeare Play

Shakespeare Text Messages: Comprehension and Reflection for ANY Shakespeare Play
ELA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Literature, Writing, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Projects

Shakespeare Text Messages: Comprehension and Reflection for ANY Shakespeare Play This resource bolsters engagement when reading ANY Shakespearean play by tapping into modern forms of communication: specifically the text message. The tools provided are designed to support reading comprehension for your high school students in grades 9-12. The assignment features an example from the play Twelfth Night, translated into modern English text messages. Learners are encouraged to choose significant extracts (20-50 lines or 12-24 pieces dialogue) from the play they are reading, focusing on plot development, character evolution or theme expression. Then they translate their chosen passage into modern text messages (while adhering to standard grammar rules and punctuation). What if the characters from the Shakespeare play you are studying lived in the modern world and were texting one another? Maybe two actors are having a private chat, or a few are in a group chat. Demonstrate your comprehension of an important scene in the play by converting it into a modern communication medium: texting. Main Features: A sample converted passage from the play Twelfth Night so students can see the assignment in action. Blank text message pages for students to use when translating their own passage. Clear student instructions. A two-page reflection task to help students deeply comprehend their chosen passage. Questions Include: Summarize this part of the play in 3-4 sentences. Who are the main characters and what has been happening in the play before this scene? Why is this part of the play important? Make one or more connections to this passage. You can think of connections to yourself (did you ever feel the same way as the character?), connections to another novel or play you have read (is there something similar about the plot of the two stories?), or connections to current events (is this something that is still important hundreds of years after it was written?). A comprehensive rubric included for students to see how they will be assessed to to ensure easy and accurate marking! Grades to Use With: This lesson is perfect for students in English Language Arts in grades 9-12 who are reading ANY Shakespeare play. What's Included: 8 page PDF

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. A beach trip is something kids might look forward to each year as a family tradition, or it might be a unique treat. No matter what it means to the kids in your life, this activity will get their imaginations rolling like the waves on the shore! Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable.
