Financial Literacy: Mean, Median & Interquartile Range of Hourly Wages

Financial Literacy: Mean, Median & Interquartile Range of Hourly Wages
Life Studies, Finance, Career, Math, Graphing, Statistics, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Here's a great application of 6th grade math statistics skills: mean, median, and interquartile range. Students will apply their knowledge of these calculations to real-life data: the hourly wages of 10 common careers. From a cashier to a taxi driver to an account to a CEO, students are given 10 realistic hourly wages. First, they create a histogram to display the data. They should notice that most of the wages cluster together at the bottom end of the distribution, and one wage, the CEO, is far at the other end. Next, they write the wages in order from smallest to largest. They use this information to calculate the mean, the median, and the interquartile range. They decide which piece of data best represents this data set. After that, they eliminate the outlier (the CEO wage) and recalculate the same statistics. They can decide if a different piece of data now represents the set better. Finally, they can reflect on what they have learned about statistics and hourly wages. A complete answer key is also included. Grades to Use With: This math application is designed to target 6th grade statistics learning outcomes, but this lesson could also be used in other middle grades classrooms to review these math skills or to start a discussion about income inequality and economic fairness. What's Included: 7 page PDF: Title and Instructions Hourly Wages Histogram 2 Pages of Statistical Questions Reflection Answer Key If you enjoy this product, check out other math statistics and data collection activities in my store: Math Project: Circle Graphs and Pie Charts Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Statistics and Probability Line Graph Assessment: Real Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit Or, check out my other products about income inequality! 6th Grade Math Bingo Review Games

6th Grade Math Bingo Review Games
, Grade 6, Activities, Games

This file contains 2 8-question bingo games for 6th grade math review. The skills covered are: ratio, proportions, deposits, distance in the coordinate plane, unit rate, order of operations, percent, evaluate, solve equations, missing values in inequalities, real world problem for division of fracitons, multiplication of decimals, greatest common factor. Directions for BINGO. Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students can use a highlighter to mark their answers. Use a different color for each game. (Don’t have them completely mark out their answers with pen or pencil in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game.) Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-10 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. I like to give a piece of candy (like jolly rancher) for BINGOs. I always help students with their problems since I use BINGO as practice not as an assessment.

These are wonderful for SEL follow-up activities, morning work, brain breaks, school counseling handouts, etc. There are 4 seasonal activity mats; fall, winter, spring, and summer. There are 2 partner-focused mats so students can connect, build friendships, and create a safe classroom community. There are 4 mats for any day of the year! Students from upper elementary through middle school will enjoy these mats. (Even adults and high schoolers would like to do some of these!) On the mats, there is mindfulness coloring/zentangle coloring, mazes, word search, reflections, SEL prompts, and more. For example on one of the mats, there is a mindfulness coloring of an anchor with the prompt to encourage students to think about what grounds them as they color. There is also a squiggle and students are encouraged to create their own unique design from it. There is also a heart maze, a triangle breath image, and an image of a turtle to encourage students to think of what brings them strength. On another mat, there is a line of different emojis and they are asked to circle how they feel in that moment. There is also a mindfulness coloring of a hot air balloon and the prompt is for them to imagine all of their worries are in the basket and as they color, they are asked to think of their worries floating away. On that same mat, there is a rainbow breath exercise and an image of a brick wall with the prompt for students to write in the bricks what gives them a solid foundation; their values, strengths, and purposes in life. Each mat is unique but offers opportunities for students to take a moment to relax, get their minds off their daily stress, and have fun. It is best to print these on legal-size paper so images and text are a good size with plenty of room for students to write and draw.
