Every Worksheet has 12 questions, which start simple but then develop gradually with questions 11 & 12 being more challenging. Worksheet Set 1 Students are asked to multiply simple monomials by (mainly) binomials, with some tri- & a quadri- nomial. There are no exponents to calculate. Worksheet Set 2 Students are required to multiply binomials by a monomial, moving a stage further to include exponents in each term. Worksheet Set 3 This set involves multiplying two or more monomials each with a number of variables with exponents. Worksheet Set 4 Students now practice multiplying two binomials which will include calculating multiplying variables with exponents, plus the added step of needing to combine like terms to obtain the final answer. Worksheet Set 5 This Set contains questions that include multiplying binomials by trinomials, trinomials by trinomials and trinomials raised to the power of 2 and 3 and students will practice combining like terms. Worksheet Set 6 This has an extra element in that instead of only using the standard algorithms for multiplying polynomials there is an alternative using Pascal's triangle as a way to calculate binomial terms raised to various powers through recognising the symmetry of the powers and building of the coefficients for each term. Estimating Crowd Sizes using Jacob's Method

This investigation focuses on estimating the size crowds or even large collections of objects using some very basic mathematics. Jacob's Method of counting large crowds involves creating a grid that divides a given area into equal size squares. An estimate is made by counting the number of people in a few squares, then multiply the average obtained by the number of squares in the grid. What would happen if you use different size grids ? How do the estimates compare between pupils ? Could you get a more accurate estimate if you took all the estimates in the class and calculated th average? These and many more questions are presented on the worksheet provided along with a number of pictures of multiple objects and crowds with & without prepared grids for printing or viewing on a computer screen. This activity encourages sharing and comparing of data, refining methods of collection of the data and discussion about the accuracy and limitations of the method used. The package includes: Teachers Guidance Notes An introduction into Jacob's Method and a guide to the Worksheets Estimation Worksheet A Worksheet for the students on how to use Jacob's Method and record the data. A list of questions for discussion. Estimation Crowds To be used as a starter with the student's Estimation Worksheet containing 2 crowds of different densities. Pupils begin by guessing the size of each crowd, then estimate with a 6 square grid & 24 square grid using Jacob's Method. Estimation Samples 1 and 2 14 pictures to choose from all of which have a fairly even distribution: crowds of people, tomatoes,stars, trees, bricks, flowers, balloons, birds and more. Pupils estimate with no grid, a 6 square grid & 24 square grid, and are encouraged to experiment further with other grid sizes of their own. Estimation Sample 3 7 more pictures to choose from, but this time the distribution of the populations are not so even or regular, so its more challenging and opens up more questions. They include a football crowd, bubbles, two other crowds, a shoal of fish and a herd of wildebeast. There is lots to practice with & an excellent topic for critical thinking without the need for advanced math and can be extended into investigating bias in crowd counting. These 14 sets of differentiated worksheets aims to develop all the skills needed to add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators. Combining 2 important areas of the Common Core 4th grade Math curriculum on fractions these resources create a smooth transition from adding and subtracting fractions less than one to adding and subtracting mixed numbers, all with the same denominators. The method used is as follows: 1. Convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions 2. Add or subtract the improper fractions 3. Convert the final fraction back to a mixed number. For the Numerical questions there are 2 levels where the range of denominators used are different, and in set 13 & 14 the range of whole numbers. A little memory jogger on each Worksheet At the top of the worksheets using the visual fraction model there is an example shown as a memory jogger and as a teaching tool if needed. How many worksheets are in each set ? Lots and lots. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time. This will allow you to create as many new worksheets you will need for practice throughout the year (classwork, homework, revision, fillers etc) or even give small groups of students in your class different sets of questions either at the same level or differentiated . There will certainly be enough to ensure fluency in this topic. You could also use any of the worksheets to explain or introduce the subject to your class as you will have almost unlimited examples to work with and they will be different from the actual worksheets you hand out to your students. Writing large numbers in expanded form is the process of breaking down numbers into their appropriate place value. It is useful for doing large sums without a calculator and helps students better understand the difference between thousands, hundredths, tens, and units. Finding the expanded form of a number means looking at each digit in the multi-digit number to see what place value that digit is in. For example, if the digit 5 is in the hundreds place, then in expanded form that digit would be written as 500. This editable PowerPoint explains pairs of linear equations for 8th grade math students. First, we will explain what a pair of equation is. Next, we have to discover what kind of things we can do in order to get the solution. We will find, that we have to look at both equations at the same time to get a meaningful solution. After that, we present the idea of placing the pair of equations to a coordinate plane. This is straightforward when the pair of equations has x and y as variables, we can use the all familiar xy-coordinate plane. At the first phase we will find the solutions from coordinate planes when the lines are already there. At the next phase, we will look at how to draw the lines from the equations. For that, we will use small tables where we calculate some values for x and y. Then drawing the lines is easy. For 8.EE.C.8.B we explain how to transform te equations first and then solve from graph. (In common core, this is called solving from equations, although the common core doesn't actually require students to solve the pair of equations algebraically.) We also point out some special cases, where there is no solution. In section 8.EE.C.8.C there are some real-world problems. We will go through some examples where we create a pair of equations from a verbal problem. There is also an extra sections about actually solving pairs of linear equations algebraically, this is good to know information for many students although the common core doesn't require it.
