One crossword puzzle asks students to fill in color words from seven descriptive clues, such as "The color of the night sky" for black and "The color of the sun" for yellow, split across Across and Down entries. Simple Machines word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this simple machines puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our physical science unit. The kids used scissors and ramps every day but had no idea they were looking at simple machines. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, screw, wedge, fulcrum, load, effort, force, simple machine, compound machine, seesaw, flagpole, and ramp. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the names and functions finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a doorknob is a wheel and axle or something else. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple drawings of a lever and a pulley but nothing too busy. Works for 2nd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers find one example of each simple machine in the classroom on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Simple and Compound Sentences word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this simple and compound sentences puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our writing unit. The kids could write basic sentences but had no idea how to combine two ideas or what made a sentence simple versus compound. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like simple sentence, compound sentence, subject, predicate, independent clause, conjunction, comma, and, but, or, so, and FANBOYS. Examples include I ran (simple) and I ran, but I was late (compound). Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the sentence structure finally click. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a compound sentence needs a comma before the conjunction. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple plus sign and equal sign drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one simple and one compound sentence on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

The Bill of Rights Unit (and a Little About Amendments 11-27)

The purpose of this 49-page mini-unit is for students in grades 6-12 to develop a clear understanding of what their rights are under the Constitution, particularly our rights under the Bill of Rights. Increasingly, Americans, especially students, are not able to name many of the rights we are entitled to in the Bill of Rights. They are well aware of Amendment 2 and parts of Amendment 1, and the “I plead the fifth” clause of Amendment 5, but they are woefully uninformed of the other rights that protect us. This mini-unit is designed to give students not only a complete understanding of these rights but opportunities to put their knowledge into practice through the various worksheets and a culminating project at the end of the unit, which is available separately in my store,, “A Great Good Place for Teachers,” called The Bill of Rights: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding. The ultimate goal is for them to have a healthy and complete understanding of why these basic rights are so necessary for our democracy. This mini-unit is part of my unit: “Our Living Consitution” which is designed using the Into, Through, and Beyond model of lesson planning.
