About This Product
This is a set of Area and Perimeter Problem Solving Mini Tasks.
It includes four mini problem solving tasks aligned to the Common Core standards for 3rd and 4th grade students. These tasks are aligned to these standards: 3.MD.C.5a, 3.MD.C.5b 3.MD.C.6, and 4.MD.A.3.
The problems are as follows:
1. Millie’s doghouse covered a total of 50 square feet. On the graph paper below, show 3 different ways Millie’s doghouse might have been built. Hint: It doesn’t have to be a square or rectangle shape!
2. Shane would like to build a garden in his backyard. In order to plant all the vegetables he wants to grow, he figures he’ll need 62 square yards of space. Show 3 different ways Shane might build his garden. Hint: It doesn’t have to be a square or rectangle shape!
3. Scott wants to create a nice living space for his new tiny frog. He figures the frog will need 80 square inches of space to be comfortable. Show outlines for 3 possible living spaces for Scott’s frog. Hint: It doesn’t have to be a square or rectangle shape!
4.The size of Hazel’s town is 48 square miles. What might the perimeter of her town look like on a map? Show 3 possible perimeters for Hazel’s town. Hint: It doesn’t have to be a square or rectangle shape!
A page with example answers for #1 is included.
These are great tasks for homework. You could also use them during small group, so you can work closely with students while they solve the problems.
