BC Towns' Populations: Place Value Worksheets Applied Math

With this Exploring BC Towns: Place Value to 10,000 Activity your students who are in grades 4 and 5 will be able to easily apply their knowledge of place value to a real-world task!

Students will:

• listen carefully to the populations of six towns in British Columbia, Canada and record them on a table

• round each population to the nearest hundred

• work with the populations: by ordering, comparing two populations, writing in expanded form, and doing exact calculations

Grades to Use With:

This lesson is designed for your students in grade 4 or grade 5 who are reviewing or learning key place value concepts (of course, it can be used by Canadian students, but the lesson could also work for classes in other countries around the world too!). This could be an easy start of the school year math activity after summer break. It could also be used in middle school special education classrooms.

How to Use:

These worksheets can be used as an in-class lesson during your place value unit.

-Print a double-sided worksheet for each student.

-Use Wikipedia to find the populations.

-Read each population aloud so students can write it in the table.

-Students complete the questions: rounding, comparing, ordering numbers, writing in expanded form, subtracting, and labeling the map.
