The number line is ideal for introducing rounding decimal numbers to a specific place value. Here we focus on numbers containing tenths, hundredths and thousandths and then round each of these to the nearest whole number, or numbers to 1d.p or 2 d.p. Worksheet Sets Worksheet Set 1: The focus here is on rounding numbers written to 1 d.p. to the nearest whole number. Students are encouraged firstly to find the number on the number lines provided before doing the actual rounding. Worksheet Set 2: Numbers written to 2 d.p. need to be rounded to either the nearest whole number or to 1d.p. Worksheet Set 3: Numbers written to 3 d.p. need to be rounded to either the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth. In this worksheet the language of the questions is much more varied. How many worksheets are in each set ? Lots and lots. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time. This will allow you to create as many new worksheets you will need for practice throughout the year (classwork, homework, revision, fillers etc) or even give small groups of students in your class different sets of questions . Brain Burners Word Problems Packet
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Order Of Operations, Place Value, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets
This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

Large Number Place Value: Comparing Countries with Decimal Millions and Billions
Social Studies, Geography, Math, Addition and Subtraction, Subtraction, Decimals, Place Value, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets
This activity helps reinforce large number place value using the populations of countries around the world. It is interesting and relevant for students in the intermediate or middle school grades, and it could easily tie in with social studies curriculum . If students have internet access, they can search for the population of each country independently. If not, you can find the populations and read them aloud for students to record. Then students need to work with the numbers: rounding, ordering, estimating, and calculating. This activity works well when completed in partners, small groups, or independently. Grades to Use With: This activity works well in the middle grades (from grades 4-8) or in a high school special education classroom. How to Use: Students need to find the populations of 10 countries: Turkey, Chile, Brazil, China, Canada, United States, Israel, Iceland, Ethiopia, and Mexico. They write each population in regular form and then round to decimal millions (for example 37.2 million). Next, they write the countries' populations in order from smallest to largest and answer some questions that compare the populations. They also write three of the populations in expanded form, and calculate the exact difference between two of the countries. Standards: CCSS4.NBT.A.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. CCSS4.NBT.A.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. CCSS5.NBT.A.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

Write multi-digit whole numbers in expanded form
Math, Numbers, Place Value, Grade 4, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Writing large numbers in expanded form is the process of breaking down numbers into their appropriate place value. It is useful for doing large sums without a calculator and helps students better understand the difference between thousands, hundredths, tens, and units. Finding the expanded form of a number means looking at each digit in the multi-digit number to see what place value that digit is in. For example, if the digit 5 is in the hundreds place, then in expanded form that digit would be written as 500. There are 4 Sets of Worksheets: -Expanding 3 digit-numbers -Expanding 4 digit-numbers -Expanding 5 digit-numbers -Expanding 6 digit-numbers -Each Set has two possible presentations : Numbers presented with each place value digit color coded and an example with a place value table at the top of the page. Numbers written out without the color coding and the example at the top of page without the place value table With the 4 Sets and 2 the presentations you have essentially 8 possible options to choose from and be able to differentiate from the very start. Format of large numbers For all of these resources you have a choice of 3 different number formats which will cover most educators' needs around the world. Place Value Worksheets: Country Morning Work, Country Mini Project
Math, Place Value, Early Math, Geography, Social Studies, Grade 4, 5, 6, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables
Here is a super easy, year-long morning work routine for your grade 4, 5, or 6 class. It easily integrates both world geography and place value math learning! HOW TO USE: 1) Print the 5 pages of worksheets for each student every two-week period. 2) Each day, you will choose a specific country for your class to research. Choose the country yourself, ask for your students to provide their own suggestions, or play "WORLD"LE to select the new country each day. You can find "WORLD"LE by searching for it. 3) Project a website that has information about the country of the day on your interactive whiteboard. Search for "National Geographic" or "Kids World Travel Guide" for kid-friendly reading passages and fun facts. 4) Students will write down the country’s name and continent, draw the flag, record the population, and add a fun fact. Conversely they could also research this information themselves, if they each have access to a device. 5) Then, your students will complete five math tasks using the country of the day's population as their place value prompt. These tasks include: multiplying the country’s population by different amounts such as 2, 5, or 10 dividing the country's population in half adding to or subtracting from the population writing the population of the country in expanded form rounding the population to a certain place value spot 6) Take time to review the day’s country together. Ask your students to practice reading the large numbers aloud. 7) After eight days, your students will be able to order the eight countries they have studied from the largest to the smallest population in standard form and using decimal millions. 8) Then, you can begin the routine again! What's Included: 7 Page PDF: Ready to Print and Use - Teacher Instructions (With Website Links) - 4 Pages: Country of the Day Worksheets (Enough for 8 Days) - 1 Page Ordering Worksheet - Sample Answer Key to Use as a Model
