Write multi-digit whole numbers in expanded form
Math, Numbers, Place Value, Grade 4, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Writing large numbers in expanded form is the process of breaking down numbers into their appropriate place value. It is useful for doing large sums without a calculator and helps students better understand the difference between thousands, hundredths, tens, and units. Finding the expanded form of a number means looking at each digit in the multi-digit number to see what place value that digit is in. For example, if the digit 5 is in the hundreds place, then in expanded form that digit would be written as 500. There are 4 Sets of Worksheets: -Expanding 3 digit-numbers -Expanding 4 digit-numbers -Expanding 5 digit-numbers -Expanding 6 digit-numbers -Each Set has two possible presentations : Numbers presented with each place value digit color coded and an example with a place value table at the top of the page. Numbers written out without the color coding and the example at the top of page without the place value table With the 4 Sets and 2 the presentations you have essentially 8 possible options to choose from and be able to differentiate from the very start. Format of large numbers For all of these resources you have a choice of 3 different number formats which will cover most educators' needs around the world. A comma separator - for the USA & UK e.g. 23,334,290 A space separator - Canada, Australia, plus many European countries e.g. 23 334 290 No separator - often used in scientific writings, page numbers, years & addresses e.g. 23334290 How many Worksheets are there ? Virtually unlimited. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time which allows you to create as many new worksheets as you need for each of the 8 options for classwork, homework, extra practice or revision throughout the year or even give groups of pupils in your class different sets of questions. Answers found on the second page of every worksheet are automatically generated when you create a new worksheet . Note These resources are PDF documents and work with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computers with the randomising buttons also working via a touchscreen (PC or Mac)or on an Interactive Whiteboard. Brain Burners Word Problems Packet
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Order Of Operations, Place Value, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets
This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

Binary Mystery Pictures Freebie
Math, Algebra, Place Value, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Binary Mystery Pictures This is an extension activity used after the students have had several lessons on place value for base 2. They should have also had practice converting base 10 numbers using 0 and 1 to write numbers in base 2 (binary). The picture activity takes conversion one step further, having the student filling in each box as a 0 or 1, with a 1 represented by a shaded box. Converting the given numbers from base 10 to base 2 will reveal a pixelated image, as a computer would draw it on the screen. The grid is divided into 2 main sections (A and B), each with 8 smaller columns across. Notice the two columns of numbers along the grid to the left. The column of numbers on the left correspond to section A and the numbers on the right correspond to section B. Directions: 1. For each row, convert each base 10 number to base 2. Show your answer by shading in the appropriate boxes in the corresponding column. A shaded box represents that place value as a “1.” Example: In the grid below, the first row lists 0 and 0, so therefore, no boxes are shaded. In the second row in section A, 0 is listed so again no boxes in that section's row are shaded. In the second row, section B, 15 is shown. To represent 15 as an 8-digit binary number, you would shade the first four boxes from the right to represent “00001111” in the place values filled. 2. Continue converting numbers for each row until the picture is revealed.
