Equal Groups Practice Worksheets

This product is similar to my Arrays product. Both equal groups and arrays are important skills for students to grasp to help them master their multiplication facts. Equal groups will help students understand why the numbers are being multiplied together, and how the answer is reached.

This equal groups product works great for both 2nd and 3rd grades. With these worksheets students look closely at how many groups there are, how many objects are in each group, and how many there are total. They also write the repeated addition problem. This is another way for them to understand the concept of multiplication. Students then have the opportunity to create their own equal groups. They are given multiplication problems, and they have to draw what the equal groups would look like. I would definitely let them know that the focus is on the multiplication concept and not on spending too long on a picture.

While in 3rd grade we really want students to eventually memorize their multiplication facts, teaching equal groups first will help students better visualize and understand the concept of multiplication.
