About This Product

Are you ready to dive into Black History Month in a creative and engaging way? Introducing the Freedom Quilt Craft, a hands-on art project that not only celebrates African-American heritage but also teaches students about the incredible, hidden history of the Underground Railroad. This quilt is made from paper, no stitching is needed. Students will create their quilts with paper, markers, glue, and poster board. Check out the materials and directions below.

Quilts were more than just a comforting blanket; they were lifesaving tools, hiding coded messages that guided slaves to freedom. When displayed on fences or clotheslines, these unique patterns would discreetly mark escape routes and sanctuaries for those daring enough to follow their path to liberty.

Ideal for 2nd through 6th grade, this versatile project can be easily modified or extended, and even paired with research assignments throughout Black History Month. Our Freedom Quilt Printable lets students create their own quilt while learning valuable lessons about the Underground Railroad and slavery in the 1800s.

Within this resource, you'll find 16 patterns - eight of which tell the incredible story of escape! Choose from black/white or color options and encourage students to unleash their creativity with a blank template also included. Use it not only for Black History Month but also for any study on American history.

Join all those honoring the brave individuals who risked everything for freedom by exploring the remarkable world of Freedom Quilts. Let's start creating together our understanding of history and celebrate the strength and courage of those who came before us!
