Georgia has recently unveiled the NEW math standards for 5th grade, set for 2023!

NOTE: THIS DOCUMENT CAN BE MODIFIED.

This document will help you to start the year STRONG and teach to the new standards with precision. Students love having checklists, and teachers love having a guide to refer to on a daily basis to stay on track! Get your students ready for the MILESTONES.

I recommend the following uses for this resource:

- Utilize standards checklists/chart to instruct the NEW GEORGIA MATH STANDARDS 2023.
- Print the document on colored cardstock and laminate for longevity.
- Generate posters for the board, using a dry-erase marker to mark off the day's learning objectives.
- Include in your teacher portfolio alongside student work from each unit.
- Print and insert into student interactive notebooks, allowing students to check off standards as they are assessed or mastered.
- Implement digitally at the start of a lesson or to gauge comprehension of learning targets.
- Rearrange the standards to align with your school’s specific learning plan.

Print the seven unit display slides on coloured cardstock and laminate them, then mark the day's learning target with a dry-erase marker — the slide carries the unit name and its "Students will…" statement at display size.
Keep the curriculum map slide beside the planbook: it assigns a week range to every unit and names which standards belong where, which is the piece a long-range plan actually needs.
Shrink the standards slides for student interactive notebooks so students can mark off each numbered element — 5.NR.4.1, 5.NR.4.2, 5.NR.4.3, 5.NR.4.4 — as it is assessed.
Leave the Mathematical Practices slide on display for the whole year rather than rotating it; the deck marks 5.MP.1-8 as essential to the instruction in every unit.
Post each unit's vocabulary slide at the start of that unit so the terms are up before the first lesson — the geometry list, for instance, front-loads axes, origin, ordered pair and first quadrant.

Skills covered

Standards-based long-range planning — teachers work from a curriculum map that assigns Georgia's eight Grade 5 units to two semesters with a week range for each.
Learning-target display — teachers post the unit statement slides so the current target, such as writing expressions to represent volume, is visible on the board.
Mastery tracking — the numbered elements printed under each parent standard give a line-by-line list teachers can check off in a portfolio or student notebook.
Mathematical vocabulary front-loading — teachers post the term list for a unit, from unit cube and edge length through partial quotient to first quadrant, before instruction begins.

Which units from the Georgia pacing guide get their own slide set?

Seven of the eight: Investigating Volume of Solid Figures, Building Conceptual Understanding of Place Value Using Measurement and Data Reasoning, Building Conceptual Understanding of Multiplication & Division With Whole Numbers, Building Fraction Understanding, Making Sense of Fraction Multiplication & Division, Extending Place Value and Working With Decimals, and Exploring Geometry & The Coordinate Plane. The map's eighth column, a Culminating Review Unit marked "All Standards", is covered by the earlier units' slides rather than a set of its own.

Are the standards written out in full, or reduced to their codes?

Written out in full. Each unit's standards slide gives the parent standard's complete wording — 5.NR.4: "Read, write, and compare decimal numbers to the thousandths place, and round and perform operations with decimal numbers to the hundredths place to solve real-life, mathematical problems" — and then every numbered element beneath it as its own line.

What does the pacing guide slide actually show?

Two semesters split into eight named units, each with a suggested duration and its standard codes: 2-3 weeks for volume of solid figures under 5.GSR.8 and 5.NR.5, 4-5 weeks for place value with measurement and data under 5.NR.1 and 5.MDR.7, 5-6 weeks for fraction multiplication and division under 5.NR.3, and so on, with 5.MP.1-8 attached across most units.
