About This Product

These sets of worksheets focus on three very important skills that are introduced in the Common Core in Grade 6:

  • writing algebraic expressions from verbal descriptions.

  • Identifying  the various parts or components of algebraic expressions.

  • Evaluate expressions by substituting numbers for variables.

These skills are important in helping with the  transition from numerical operations to algebraic thinking which in all curricula follows on shortly afterwards.

The structure of the worksheets are such that there is a progression that follows the stages laid out in the Common Core standard 6.E.E.A.2:

Set 1:  Writing expressions with the 4 operations

Set 2:  Writing expressions with the 4 operations, parenthesis and exponents

Set 3:  Help Sheet with definitions of the components of expressions

Identifying  the parts or components of algebraic expressions

Set 4A:
Evaluating Expressions with 4 operations - numbers and variables between 2 and 12

Set 4B: Evaluating Expressions with 4 operations - numbers and variables between 8 and 30

Set 5: Evaluating Expressions with 4 operations, parenthesis and exponents

Set 6: Formula Sheet

Evaluating Expressions with real world formulae

You have Virtually unlimited worksheets: Numbers, variables, constants and coefficients are changed when a button is clicked (located at the bottom of each worksheet). This permits you to build as many new worksheets you need for practice throughout the year (classwork, homework, revision, fillers etc). You can even give small groups of students in your class different sets of questions so they have to work indepndently. There will certainly be enough to ensure fluency in this topic.

Answers can be found on the second page of every worksheet. These are automatically generated whenever you build a new worksheet.

Lastly, it's essential to note that these resources are compatible PDF documents and work with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows and Mac computers.
