While percent problems might seem easy, some of the trickier aspects of these problems can occur when the student is also trying to determine if they are calculating the part, percent, or whole. To add a little extra practice with these types of problems, especially within a winter theme, there is a Digital Winter Break Escape Room that gives them the practice opportunities that are required. Here, instead of completing a series of problems, these individuals become a character within a story that requires them to use percent problems to save the Frostbite Festival. The activity involves solving twenty practical percent word problems centered around percent of a number with the objective of determining the whole using the part and the percent in each word problem. The word problems are divided across four escape room scenarios: the Snack Shack, the Skating Trail, the Yeti Workshop, and the Penguin Performance, so it does not seem like it is all one assignment. In order to go to the next answer, the student must enter the correct answer to the previous problem. The escape session is self-checked, and the student cannot go to the next answer if his answer is not correct. This resource requires absolutely no prep. There are no accounts that need to be set up, no passwords that need to be maintained, or complex setups that need to take place. Math Mini Unit: Converting Scores into Percentages This ready-to-print booklet is a real world math tool for teachers of grades 5-8. The activities inside let students practice and apply their knowledge of percentages, decimals, and fractions practically: to convert their test and assignment scores to a common denominator of 100 so that they can easily compare their learning and growth across several tasks. I find that my students love learning this skill: it makes them feel mature and gives them ownership over their learning. How to Use: This 8-page booklet guides students to calculate their scores as percentages, offering them an interesting hands-on experience in crunching numbers. The mini-unit features various problem-solving methods supported by detailed visuals, explanatory notes, practice questions, and partner-focused activities. The content ranges from dealing with equivalent fractions with easily convertible denominators (10, 20, 25) to complex conversions involving more than one-step. Dividing the numerator by the denominator is also explored as a strategy to use with ANY test score. I go through the pages of the booklet with my students over several classes. We complete some practice problems together as a class, I allow some partner or small group work, and I also assign some questions for students to complete independently. It could be a great addition to your geometry or measurement unit in grades 4-6. Students will practice drawing regular and irregular polygons with given perimeters. They will need to use math skills including addition, division, or knowledge of factors to determine how to make a specific kind of shape with a provided perimeter. This game is ready-to-go! Simply show the two sample rounds to your students to teach them how to play. Then each student needs a six-sided die and the three-page game. Students can play on their own or in small groups where they can share ideas. There are three rounds to play! A question to help students notice the strategy of the game is included. Students should notice that it is easier to make a regular shape if the perimeter is divisible by the number of sides of the shape. For example, to make a regular pentagon with the digits 5 and 1, I would make the perimeter 15 units, so each side could be 3 units long. A bonus question for early finishers is also included. ANSWER: A decagon has 10 sides. So, a regular decagon could easily have a perimeter of 10, 20, 30, 40 units. That could be hard in this game because the die does not have a zero. Grades to Use With: This game is designed for students in grades 4-6 who are learning about perimeter of polygons, regular vs irregular polygons, factors, and division. It's also a great way to practice critical thinking and strategy.
