This beginning sound sort is a great hands on activity for recognizing the most common sound of each letter of the alphabet. This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing the beginning sound of each letter from amongst other letter sounds or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words.
To complete this sorting activity, students will look at the pictures inside the gold coins and place the coin into the correct pot according to that picture's beginning sound.

There are twenty-six pot mats that each have one letter of the alphabet on the pot, in both its capital form and its lowercase form.
There are 52 gold coin pieces for students to match with the correct pot. There are also pictures for X in the initial position and X in the final position depending on which sound is taught.

If making a file folder game, the teacher will place one or two mats on either side of the folder and use hook and loop fasteners to sort the gold coin pictures.
