Story Outline Skeleton Activity

A one-page story-planning template breaks narrative structure into six parts: the main character's obvious external need, a hidden internal need, an inciting incident labeled 'Enticing Incident,' three complications the character must face, a 'Help' section for a mentor or turning point, and a final resolution. Students either choose an existing story to map onto this skeleton or invent an original one, filling in each section as a planning step before drafting. The single page contains no printed example story or sample answers, so it functions purely as a reusable outline framework rather than a completed model text. Once a story is drafted from the outline, a creative writing checklist covering the same story-structure elements plus C.O.P.S. proofreading gives students a self-editing pass.
