Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Research and summarize key facts about Ancient Greek culture, government, religion, and geography from external sources.
  • Compare and contrast gender roles for boys and girls in Ancient Greece using a Venn diagram.
  • Distinguish between myths, legends, and folktales.
  • Explain how geography and religion shaped daily life in Ancient Greece.
  • Synthesize research findings into a personal reflection (new facts, surprises, and remaining questions).

Teaching tips

  • Test every external link before assigning this WebQuest - several use goo.gl short links, a service Google has discontinued, so those redirects may no longer work and would need replacement with direct URLs.
  • The task numbering skips from Task #7 to Task #9 (there's no Task #8 label on the student-facing numbering, though the answer key refers to "Task #8: Mythology") - clarify this mismatch with students before assigning so they don't think they're missing a task.
  • Because the teacher copy's answer key includes full opinion-based model answers (e.g., for why Greek democracy evolved into an aristocracy), use it as a benchmark for depth rather than a single "correct" answer, since several questions are interpretive.
  • The Venn diagram task requires at least five points per section from two full articles - budget more class time for Task #2 than the single-question tasks.

Skills covered

  • Research skills
  • Reading comprehension
  • Compare and contrast

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Are the external links still expected to work, given how old some of the URL formats are?

Not guaranteed - several links use goo.gl short URLs, a Google service that has been discontinued, so those specific links are likely broken and would need to be replaced with direct URLs before assigning this WebQuest.
