About this resource
Decorate ten farm-animal pictures with this Q-Tip activity packet. Duck, horse, mouse, pig, chicken, sheep, cow, goat, bunny and turkey pages have small circles for painting and printed animal names.
The eleven-page PDF includes the ten animal sheets and an activity-ideas cover. Supply paint and cotton swabs or another suitable tool. For an added recognition task, write selected letters, numbers or shapes inside the circles before use.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Place a dab of colour inside a single small printed circle, repeatedly, until one animal picture is filled
Isolate one finger from the rest of the hand when a fingertip replaces the cotton bud
Name ten farm animals from the word printed at the top of each page
Pick out a target letter, number or shape among others when an adult has written characters into the circles
Teaching tips
Print one animal at a time rather than the whole packet; each page stands alone, which lets the same file restock a fine-motor tray over several weeks
No colour is specified anywhere on the pages, so a child can be handed one colour, the colour that matches the animal, or free choice depending on what is being practised
The letters-and-numbers idea needs characters written into the circles before the sheet reaches the child, so write on the printed copy and keep the original clean
Q-tips, a fingertip, paint sticks and dot markers all suit the same printed circles, which means one page can be repeated with a different tool when a child needs more of the same practice
Because each animal is named on its own sheet, the set doubles as a farm vocabulary prompt while the dotting is going on
Skills covered
Pincer grip and tool control — a child holds a cotton bud and lands each dab of colour inside one small printed circle at a time.
Finger isolation — the cover's second idea drops the tool altogether and has the child use a single fingertip, which it names as a finger-isolation activity.
Letter, number and shape recognition — the third idea has an adult write characters into the circles so the child fills in only the circles carrying a target letter, number or shape.
Sustained work on one picture — each sheet holds a single animal built from circles, so a child returns to the same page until it is complete rather than answering and moving on.
Farm animal naming — every page prints its animal's name above the picture being filled, pairing the written word with the image.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
How can the same sheet be turned into a recognition task?
By writing into the circles first. The cover's third idea has an adult write different letters, numbers or shapes inside the circles and ask the child to fill in only the ones carrying a target character, so the picture emerges from correct choices.
What can be used in place of a cotton bud?
A single fingertip, which the cover calls a finger-isolation activity, or paint sticks and other mediums, listed as the fourth suggestion. The circles suit any tool that leaves a small round mark.
