About this resource

Transformations Review and Test

Support your students’ learning with this Transformations Review and Test. This resource was specifically designed to assess student understanding. This review and test were crafted for your Year 6 Geometry students.

How to Use This Review and Test:

Once you have completed instruction for your Transformations unit, you can print the review pages and allow students to complete them. The review is a 3-page printable with 8 questions. Students will rotate figures, describe reflections, and more. The review is something that can be completed independently, with a partner, or as a whole group.

Use the completed review to decide whether students need more practice before the test. The test is a 3-page printable with 5 questions.

I hope you enjoy!

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Translate, rotate, and reflect a figure on grid paper or a coordinate plane according to given instructions.

  • Describe a translation, rotation, or reflection in words, including the required distance/angle, direction, and point or line of reference.

  • Apply a sequence of transformations to the same figure and track its final position and coordinates.

Teaching tips

  • Share the review's marking rubric (page 8) with students before the test, since it spells out exactly which elements — e.g., naming 'rotate,' a distance, a direction, and a point — must appear in a correct written description.

  • Assign the review's section-by-section practice (translate, then rotate, then reflect) before the test, which mixes all three transformation types together in cumulative, multi-step questions.

  • Use the trapezoid multi-step question (test, question 5) as a class discussion piece, since it asks students to reconstruct three chained transformations rather than perform a single one.

Skills covered

  • Performing transformations — students translate, rotate, and reflect figures on grid paper according to given distances, angles, and points of reference.

  • Describing transformations in words — students name the transformation type and its required elements (distance, direction, point, or line) to describe a shown transformation.

  • Coordinate tracking through multi-step transformations — students apply a translation, rotation, and reflection in sequence to the same figure and record the final coordinates of a labelled point.
