About this resource

These letter A cut-and-paste activities provide three sorts: pictures beginning with A, capital A and lowercase a versus other letters, and long-A versus short-A pictures.

Use the pages separately for literacy centres, small groups or additional practice. Supply scissors and glue, and name the pictures together before sorting. The five-page PDF includes three activity pages and two end pages.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students can identify pictures whose names begin with the letter A.

  • Students can distinguish capital A and lowercase a from visually similar letters.

  • Students can sort words by long-A versus short-A vowel sound.

Teaching tips

  • Use the three pages as separate stations or a single letter-A unit, since each page is a self-contained sorting task with its own instructions.

  • Pre-cut the picture and letter pieces for younger students who need scissor support, since the pages are built around gluing rather than drawing or writing.

  • Introduce the long-A/short-A sorting page after students are already comfortable identifying the letter itself, since it adds a vowel-sound distinction on top of basic letter recognition.

Skills covered

  • Beginning-sound letter recognition — identifying pictures whose names start with the letter A and gluing them inside an apple outline.

  • Letter-form discrimination — sorting capital A and lowercase a apart from similar-looking letters like M, O, and x.

  • Long and short vowel sound sorting — classifying pictures by whether their name uses a long-A or short-A sound.
