Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify a novel's author, original language, and genre.

  • Track identifying details for six main characters as they appear in the novel.

  • Describe the significance of four key settings within the story.

  • Summarise the events of each chapter (5 through 18) as they read.

Teaching tips

  • Assign the character and setting pages before students start reading, then have them fill in details as each character or setting is introduced rather than all at once.

  • Have students complete one chapter-summary box after each reading session so the grid stays current with class progress.

  • Use the six named characters on the organiser as a quick check that students are tracking the right cast as they read.

Skills covered

  • Character tracking — students record identifying details for six named characters as the novel introduces them.

  • Setting analysis — students describe the role of four key locations within the story.

  • Chapter summarisation — students condense each chapter's events into a short written summary.
