About this resource

Practice beginning letter sounds and short vowels with picture-based activities. Children circle initial letters, identify and write short vowels, choose matching words and connect pictures with words.

The thirty-four-page PDF contains thirty-two activity pages plus a cover and closing page. Provide pencils and colouring materials. The activities focus on beginning sounds and short vowels; a long-vowel silent-e section is not included.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify the beginning consonant sound of a pictured object and match it to its letter.

  • Recognise and produce the correct short vowel sound in simple three-letter words.

  • Match a picture to its correctly spelled word.

Teaching tips

  • Work through the beginning-sounds pages before the short-vowel section, since the workbook is sequenced from initial sounds to vowel sounds.

  • Have students say each word aloud while completing the missing-vowel pages, as the workbook's own instructions direct ("Look at each picture. Write the missing vowel in each blank. Say each word.").

  • Use the short vowel review pages as a quick formative check before moving a student on to the matching-game pages.

Skills covered

  • Beginning-sound phonics — students identify and circle the initial consonant letter for pictured words.

  • Short vowel discrimination — students colour, circle, or fill in the correct short vowel (a, e, i, o, u) for pictured three-letter words.

  • Sight word matching — students draw lines connecting pictures to their correctly spelled words, such as mop, dish, and sock.
